Transportation in Laos
Laos offers a range of transportation options, including public buses, intercity trains, domestic flights, taxis, ride-hailing apps, and local vehicles such as tuk-tuks. Most cities lack metro or tram systems, and public transport is concentrated in urban centers and major routes.
- Public Transport: City buses operate in Vientiane and Luang Prabang. There are no metro, tram, or ferry systems in Laos.
- Transportation Apps: LOCA is the main ride-hailing app in Laos, available in Vientiane and some other cities. International apps like Grab and Uber are not operational.
- Internal Flights: Domestic flights connect Vientiane, Luang Prabang, Pakse, and Savannakhet. Main airlines: Lao Airlines and Lao Skyway.

- Taxis and Ride-Hailing: Metered taxis are limited; fares are often negotiated. LOCA app offers cashless payment options.
- Car Rental: Available in major cities. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is required.
- Tourist Recommendations: From Wattay International Airport (Vientiane), use LOCA, taxis, or pre-arranged hotel transfers to reach the city center.
- Accessibility: Public transport and infrastructure for travelers with disabilities are limited.
- Unique Local Transport: Tuk-tuks and jumbos (shared tuk-tuks) are common for short distances.
- Safety and Payment: Transport is generally safe; payment is usually in cash, with some apps accepting cards.
