Transportation in Maldives

The Maldives relies on a combination of ferries, speedboats, domestic flights, and taxis for transportation between islands and within urban areas. There are no metros, trams, or intercity trains. Most travel between islands is by sea or air, while local transport in Malé and other inhabited islands is by taxi or bus.

• Public Transport: Ferries connect Malé with nearby islands. The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) operates scheduled public ferries. Public buses run in Malé and Hulhumalé.
• Transportation Apps: Local apps such as PickMe Maldives and Raajje Transport Link (RTL) are available for booking taxis and ferries. International ride-hailing apps like Uber and Grab are not available.
• Internal Flights: Domestic airlines include Maldivian and FlyMe, operating flights between Malé (Velana International Airport) and regional airports such as Gan, Hanimaadhoo, and Maamigili.
• Taxi and Ride-Hailing: Taxis are available in Malé, Hulhumalé, and Addu City. Fares are fixed within city limits and paid in Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR). No metered taxis.
• Car Rental: Car rental is limited and generally not recommended. An international driving permit is required.
• Tourist Recommendations: Airport transfers to resorts are typically arranged by speedboat or seaplane. Public ferries are the most economical option for local islands.
