Transportation in Seychelles
Seychelles offers a limited but reliable range of public and private transportation options, primarily on the main islands of Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue. There are no metros, trams, or intercity trains. Most travel is by bus, taxi, ferry, or rental vehicle.
- Public Bus: The Seychelles Public Transport Corporation (SPTC) operates bus services on Mahé and Praslin. Buses run from early morning to evening. No metro or tram systems exist.
- Ferry Services: Regular ferries connect Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue. Main operators include Cat Cocos (Mahé–Praslin) and Inter Island Ferry (Praslin–La Digue).
- Transportation Apps: International ride-hailing apps (Uber, Grab) are not available. Local taxi apps such as ‘Taxi Seychelles’ and ‘SeyTaxi’ operate on Mahé and Praslin.
- Internal Flights: Air Seychelles offers domestic flights between Mahé and Praslin (approx. 15 minutes). Helicopter and small plane charters are available to other islands.
- Taxis: Widely available on Mahé and Praslin. Fares are metered or negotiated in advance.
- Car Rental: Available on Mahé and Praslin. Drivers must be at least 21 years old and hold a valid national or international license.
- Unique Local Transport: Bicycles are the main mode of transport on La Digue. Ox-carts are also used for short distances.
- Accessibility: Public transport is not fully accessible for travelers with disabilities. Taxis and private transfers may offer more accessible options.
- Payment Methods: Cash (Seychellois Rupee) is standard for buses and taxis. Ferries and car rentals accept credit cards.
- Safety and Reliability: Public transport is generally safe and reliable. Road conditions vary, and driving is on the left.
