2-Day Hsinchu Itinerary | Things to Do During a Weekend Getaway
With scenic mountains, historic temples and modern wonders, Hsinchu makes a great weekend getaway or daytrip from Taipei. A 2-day Hsinchu itinerary should contain a tour of Hsinchu City God Temple as well as a selfie at Yingximen, the city’s historic east gate, but visitors also will want to sample as many local delicacies as they can find.
Day 1 Hsinchu Itinerary | Highlights
The first thing visitors will want to do during a trip to Hsinchu is explore the sights within the city. Day one of this tour includes a visit to the Hsinchu’s top temple and science park, plus a stroll around 18 exquisite mountain peaks. Oh, and don’t forget to eat! Hsinchu has amazing local treats and Taiwanese staples, which can be found while strolling around town or at Chenghuang Temple Night Market.
- Hsinchu City God Temple – the most visited temple in town offers a historical view of local architecture and history as well as a chance to sample regional and local cuisine. Guests can admire the architecture and unique artwork displayed at Hsinchu City God Temple and grab a bite to eat at Chenghuang Temple Night Market. Don’t let the name fool you: the temple is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. everyday.
- Yin Hsi East Gate – also known as Yingximen, Yin Hsi East Gate is a picture-perfect landmark that was built in 1827. The gate is the last remaining structure of the city’s original wall and features a public square where visitors can admire the charm of city center.
- Hsinchu Science Park – a scenic walking spot that emphasizes technology, Hsinchu Science Park was established in 1980 and contains a lake area amidst some of the cities most modern buildings. Pack a picnic for this tour, and enjoy the view!
- Eighteen Peaks Mountain Park (Shibajianshan) – a fabulous forest park located within the city, Eighteen Peaks Mountain Park contains multiple walking trails and a view over the lakes at National Tsing Hua University. It’s a local hotspot for recreation and outdoor activities and a can’-miss attraction for tourists.

Day 2 Hsinchu Itinerary | Explore Museums & Can’t-Miss Attractions
Hsinchu contains a number of museums and scenic attractions, aside from the ones in the first day’s itinerary! Visitors will want to join a glass workshop and swing up by the coast for amazing views.
- Glass Museum of Hsinchu City – situated near Hsinchu Park and Hsinchu Zoo, this museum allows guests to create their own piece of glass art and showcases the beauty of the glass industry, a unique economic staple of Hsinchu.
- Image Museum of Hsinchu City – what once served as a venue for the city’s newest movies, concerts and operas, now features classical films and cinema-related exhibits. The architecture is fabulous, too!
- 17 KM Coastline Scenic Area – it’s best to bike through this area, but guests can also explore on foot. The pathway along the coast is home to diverse wildlife, harbor views, birdwatching areas, tranquil parks and a gorgeous canal.
- Hsinchu City Government Hall – loved for its architecture and outdoor fountains, Hsinchu City Government Hall features a unique U-shaped design and Western influence. The building was completed in 1926 under Japanese rule, and guests can photograph its arched corridors and Roman columns. The municipal complex is considered one of the most stately government building in Hsinchu.
- Hsinchu Zoo – families can’t pass up a visit to Taiwan’s oldest zoo, which was founded in 1936. The zoo houses more than 280 animals and sits next to Hsinchu Park. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily (closed Monday).
