Transportation in Tunisia
Tunisia offers a range of public and private transportation options connecting major cities and tourist destinations. Travelers can use metros, trains, buses, taxis, and ride-hailing apps, as well as domestic flights for longer distances.
- Public Transport: Tunis has a light metro (Tunis Metro) and tram system operated by Société des Transports de Tunis (Transtu). Buses are available in all major cities, with intercity services provided by SNTRI and regional companies.
- Key Apps: Popular ride-hailing apps include Bolt and InDriver. Uber and Grab are not available. Local taxi apps may be used in Tunis and Sfax.
- Internal Flights: Domestic flights connect Tunis, Djerba, Sfax, and Tozeur. Main airlines: Tunisair Express and Nouvelair.
- Trains and Buses: The national rail company SNCFT operates intercity trains (e.g., Tunis–Sousse–Sfax). SNTRI and private companies run long-distance buses.
- Taxis and Ride-Hailing: Metered yellow taxis are widely available in cities. Fares are regulated; always check the meter. Shared taxis (louages) operate fixed routes between towns.
- Car Rental: International and local agencies require a valid national or international driving license. Driving is on the right.
- Tourist Recommendations: From Tunis–Carthage Airport to city center: taxi (15–30 TND), airport shuttle, or car hire.
- Accessibility: Public transport accessibility for travelers with disabilities is limited; inquire in advance.
- Unique Local Transport: Louages (shared minibuses) are common for intercity travel.
- Safety and Payment: Public transport is generally safe. Payment is in cash (Tunisian dinar); cards are rarely accepted.
