Uzbekistan Payment Methods and Currency Exchange Guide

Uzbekistan Payment Methods and Currency Exchange Guide

Uzbekistan uses the Uzbekistani soʻm (UZS) as its official currency. Cash is widely used, but electronic payments are increasingly accepted in urban areas. Currency exchange and payment regulations are strictly enforced.

  • Official currency: Uzbekistani soʻm (UZS)
  • Payment methods: Cash is predominant; major hotels, restaurants, and shops in cities accept Visa and Mastercard credit/debit cards. Mobile payments (UzCard, Humo) are common locally; Apple Pay and Google Pay are limited.
  • Contactless payments: Growing in Tashkent and major cities, but not universal. International mobile wallets (Apple Pay, Google Pay) have limited acceptance.
  • ATMs: Available in cities and airports; most accept international cards (Visa, Mastercard). ATMs dispense UZS only. Rural areas may lack ATM access.
  • Currency exchange: Available at banks, official exchange offices, and airports. Exchange rates are regulated. Black market exchange is illegal.
  • Foreign currency restrictions: Large cash transactions in foreign currency are prohibited. Payments must be in UZS.
  • Cash import/export limits: Up to the equivalent of USD 10,000 (or equivalent in other currencies) can be brought in or taken out without declaration. Amounts above this must be declared to customs.
  • Transaction fees: Foreign card transactions may incur 1–3% fees. Some ATMs charge withdrawal fees for international cards.
  • Common issues: Card acceptance may be limited outside major cities. Carry sufficient cash for rural travel.
  • Major banks: National Bank of Uzbekistan, Asaka Bank, Ipoteka Bank.
  • Regulations: Follow official currency exchange channels. Retain exchange receipts for possible inspection.
