Ask a tourist about Thailand’s top shores, and you’ll hear… Phuket. But ask a savvy traveler and backpacker, and they’ll whisper… Krabi.
This hidden gem offers pristine beaches without the premium price tag or crowds. This place truly earns great fame for its wild beauty, crystal clear waters and beautiful islands.
There are many ways to travel to Krabi from Bangkok. For us, we went with the fastest and most convenient way by plane. First, we checked into Aonang Hill @11/1 Krabi, which offered stunning hillside views, tucked away from the bustling town center for some peace and quiet.
Our first agenda was a seafood feast, and “Tong Talay Seafood Buffet” didn’t disappoint. While it was a splurge, the array of fresh seafood—from oysters to crab and squid—justified the price. Their dessert buffet was the cherry on top!
Conveniently, they provided a pick-up service straight from the hotel, so we called ahead for a lift.
After we filled our stomach with plenty of seafood, the kind owner even offered us a drive to Ao Nang Beach. I love how friendly and hospitable folks in Thailand are.
From there, we walked around to scout a one-day tour to Koh Phi Phi the next day. With so many travel companies, the price will be slightly different and it will largely depend on the size of your group. Bargaining was also part of the fun and locals were open to friendly negotiations.
When in Thailand, haggle haggle haggle!
Our day began early, with a van from the tour company collecting us around 7-8 am for our shared island-hopping adventure. After a brief stop to pay the national tourist entrance fee, we were whisked away to our speedboat by our guide, setting off at 9 am. In Thailand, you have to pay these island fees, so that they can use them to upkeep the islands and beaches.
Maya Bay was our first stop, and it was as stunning as promised: turquoise waters, soft sands, and a perfect backdrop for photos. Despite our hopes of spotting baby sharks, as popularized on social media, we weren’t in luck. Remember, Maya Bay closes for two months to assist with environmental recovery—check the dates to avoid missing out.
By lunchtime, we reached Koh Phi Phi, famously known from Leonardo Dicaprio’s movie “The Beach.” A generous buffet awaited us, and afterward, we had time to explore—snapping photos, swimming, and befriending the island’s numerous cats.
Each island we visited offered its unique charm, but unfortunately the rough seas that day limited our snorkeling time and gave me a seasickness. When we landed on Bamboo Island, I took a rejuvenating nap while others soaked up the sun and the clear waters.
The tour ended at the Ao Nang shore around 5 pm. Though I was tired from all the seasickness, the beautiful day made it all worthwhile.
After our adventure-filled previous day, we dedicated our last day in Krabi to relaxation and exploration at a slower pace.
Armed with rented motorbikes, we cruised through town, keeping our eyes peeled for charming coffee shops and eateries. Our first stop was Mountain View Krabi, nestled at the foot of a mountain, seamlessly blending into its natural surroundings. Offering various seating options, from cozy spots for couples to larger areas for groups or families, it’s a must-visit for anyone seeking insta-worthy shots.
Our journey continued to ‘Into The Forest’ cafe, a whimsical spot reminiscent of stepping into a fairytale. Passing through its grand front gate felt like entering Wonderland, and we were enchanted not only by its magical ambiance but also by its fantastic menu at reasonable prices.
As our day wound down, fully recharged from these tranquil moments, we bid farewell to the stunning beauty of Krabi, carrying with us cherished memories and a renewed sense of spirit, ready to embrace the challenges ahead.
