I have explored Maharashtra, a land of diverse landscapes, rich history, and vibrant culture. You too can indulge in the scenic hill station of Lonavala and the bustling city of Matheran, where every moment is filled with excitement, exploration, and unforgettable experiences.
My journey began in the picturesque hill station of Lonavala, nestled amidst the lush greenery of the Western Ghats. After arriving, I checked into The Dukes Retreat Resort, a cozy resort surrounded by verdant hills and cascading waterfalls. I kicked off my exploration with a visit to the iconic Tiger’s Point, which offers panoramic views of the Sahyadri mountain range and the winding roads below. In the evening, I indulged in some local delicacies like hot vada pav and piping hot chai at the bustling Lonavala market.
I immersed myself in the natural beauty of Lonavala. The next day, I began with a trek to the breathtaking Lohgad Fort, where we soaked in the serene architecture of the fort and enjoyed the cool breeze of nature. Later in the afternoon, I visited the enchanting Bhaja Caves, ancient Buddhist rock-cut caves dating back to the 2nd century BC, adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures.
Leaving Lonavala behind, we journeyed to Matheran, the charming hill station of Maharashtra. Upon arrival, we checked into our boutique hotel nestled in the heart of the hills, where warm hospitality and British amenities awaited us. Our exploration began with a visit to the historic Toy Train and the vibrant Matheran Market, where we indulged in local handicrafts, chikkis (a traditional Indian sweet), and souvenirs. As the day drew to a close, we witnessed the breathtaking sunset from Sunset Point, a popular spot for tourists offering stunning views of the sun dipping below the horizon.
On day 4, we embarked on a leisurely walk to viewpoints such as Louisa Point, Alexander Point, and Panorama Point, savoring the breathtaking vistas of the surrounding hills and valleys. For further exploration, one could opt for a horse ride or hire a hand-pulled rickshaw to discover other parts of Matheran. We also enjoyed a peaceful stroll along the Charlotte Lake Promenade, immersing ourselves in the serene atmosphere of the lake. As evening descended, we made our way back to the town center to dine at a restaurant of our choice.
As our journey through Maharashtra came to a close, we bid farewell to the enchanting towns of Lonavala and Matheran. Before departing, we visited the Matheran Hill Railway Museum to delve into the history of the toy train and its role in Matheran’s development. Reflecting on our unforgettable experiences, we carried with us the memories of Maharashtra’s natural beauty, rich history, and vibrant culture, eagerly anticipating our return for another adventure in this magical land.
