A 13-day unforgettable journey to the Land of the Rising Sun, Japan

Over 13 captivating days, I immersed myself in the essence of Japan, from the dynamic streets of Tokyo to the serene beauty of Kyoto and the lively atmosphere of Osaka. The solemnity of Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park left a profound impact, while the quaint charm of Shirakawa-go and the soothing embrace of Hirayu Onsen provided moments of pure tranquillity. Each stop revealed a different facet of Japan’s rich heritage and culture, enriching my journey with unforgettable experiences.

Day 1: Touching down in Tokyo! A magical journey begins

Japan

Upon arriving at Narita Airport, I purchased a Pasmo Passport card and travelled to Shinjuku via the Narita Express. I chose to stay in Shinjuku, a bustling hub with direct links to Narita and Haneda Airports, as well as being a gateway to Japan’s endless rail and bus network. Shinjuku’s famed nightlife sealed the deal—it’s where the action never sleeps!

I checked into the APA Hotel Higashi Shinjuku Kabukicho Tower. Check-in was a breeze, with English-speaking staff making it effortless. Plus, it’s a stone’s throw from multiple train stations, with fantastic dining and shopping just steps away. For another top-notch option, consider the Premier Hotel -CABIN – Shinjuku. It’s strategically positioned near the subway, putting you within walking distance of countless attractions.

Later in the afternoon, I took the JR Yamanote Line to Shibuya station. I visited the Shibuya Sky observation deck for sunset views, which I had pre-booked online 29 days before. Then, I enjoyed dinner and experienced the iconic Shibuya Scramble Crossing amidst the rain. This day was filled with memorable experiences in Tokyo!

Day 2: Tokyo thrills: Exploring Senso-ji and Akihabara delights

Japan

After savoring a traditional Japanese breakfast at Dashi Ochazuke En Lumine Shinjuku, I hopped on the subway to Asakusa Station, a 35-minute ride away, to visit Senso-ji Temple. This iconic temple is a must-see on any Tokyo itinerary. Spending a few hours here allows you to immerse yourself in the rich architecture, traditions, and delicious food offerings from various vendors. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore the souvenir shops near the temple—I lost track of time browsing through them and indulging in tasty treats like Candied Strawberries.

Later, I enjoyed cherry blossoms at Ueno Park before walking 18 minutes to Akihabara for gaming and electronics shopping. Then, I visited Maidreamin Maid Cafe. In the evening, I went to Tokyo Skytree for a night view. Finally, I explored vibrant Kabukicho in Shinjuku with Godzilla Statue and a 3D cat billboard, ending a fantastic day in Tokyo.

Day 3: Tokyo wonders at teamLab Planets

Japan

I started the day at Chidorigafuchi Park, marveling at the cherry blossoms. Afterwards, I stopped by Tsutaya Bookstore near Tokyo Station. Following that, I had a unique experience at teamLab Planets, a futuristic museum (pre-booked online). Later, I explored Tsukiji Outer Market, savoring fresh seafood delicacies.

I headed to Uniqlo Ginza for some retail therapy, exploring its 12 floors and reveling in its status as the world’s largest Uniqlo store. I concluded my day with dinner at Ramen Tatsunoya Shinjuku, known for serving Tokyo’s finest ramen. Despite the 30-minute wait, the anticipation only heightened my excitement for what awaited me.

Day 4: Fuji Kawaguchiko: Mount Fuji majesty and lakeside bliss

Japan

My day began with checking out of the hotel and heading to Shinjuku station. I had already secured a Highway Bus ticket to Kawaguchiko online, ensuring a smooth journey of approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Upon arrival in Kawaguchiko, I checked into the charming Kawaguchiko Hotel. The Japanese-style room exuded warmth and comfort, boasting cozy futons and impeccably clean sheets. I was delighted to discover that the hotel offered onsen and sauna facilities around the clock. Though the onsen was modest in style, the experience of soaking in its waters while admiring the majestic Mt. Fuji was truly enchanting.

Later in the day, I rode the Lake Kawaguchi Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway for scenic views. Then, I explored Lake Kawaguchi, enjoyed a lakeside stroll, boating, and crossed the Lake Kawaguchi Great Bridge to admire stunning views of Mt. Fuji.

Day 5: Fuji Kawaguchiko: Chureito Pagoda heights and lavender fields

Japan

I embarked on a 45-minute journey via local train to Shimoyoshida station. From there, it was just a short 10-15 minute walk to the base of the Chureito Pagoda, renowned for its panoramic view of Mount Fuji. Climbing the 400 steps to the top was a bit challenging, but the breathtaking vista made it all worthwhile. However, patience was key as I waited my turn at the main viewpoint, with only 50 people allowed at a time to capture photos with the Pagoda and Mount Fuji in the background.

My luck seemed to be in full swing as the skies were exceptionally clear—a rare treat considering Mount Fuji is visible only about 15% of the time. The full bloom of cherry blossoms added an extra layer of beauty to the already stunning scenery.

I returned to Shimoyoshida Station via Shimoyoshida Honcho Street for more stunning Fuji views. After lunch, I visited Oishi Park on Lake Kawaguchiko with lavender fields and a playground, all with Mt. Fuji as a backdrop.

Day 6: Matsumoto: Castle wonders

Japan

The day kicked off with an exciting visit to Fuji-Q Highland, just a station away from Kawaguchiko. This theme park offers free entry, making it perfect for group outings. The Tower attraction, where you can walk in the air attached to a harness, was particularly thrilling.

Afterwards, I took a train back to Kawaguchiko and began my journey to Matsumoto. The Fujikyuko Line swiftly transported me to Otsuki in 45 minutes, with trains departing every 30 minutes. From there, I transferred to the JR Chuo Line for a scenic 60-minute ride to Kofu, followed by a picturesque 70-minute journey on the Azusa Line to Matsumoto.

Upon arrival, I headed straight to Matsumoto Castle, renowned as one of Japan’s finest. The castle’s illuminated beauty at night was truly captivating. My stay at the Premier Hotel Cabin Matsumoto offered a comfortable base for exploring the city’s attractions.

Day 7: Hirayu Onsen: Hot springs serenity

Japan

After a satisfying breakfast, I revisited the enchanting Matsumoto Castle, still captivated by its illuminated beauty from the night before.

Then, I boarded the bus to Kamikochi, which I prebooked through japanbusonline.com for ¥2600. Upon arrival, I stored my luggage at the K-30 bus terminal and explored the area, taking in scenic spots like Kappa Bridge and Myojin Bridge. Next, I caught a ¥1100 bus to Hirayu Onsen, where I checked into Hotel Tsuyukusa. With its private onsen and convenient location, it provided the perfect spot to relax after a day of adventure.

Day 8: Takayama to Kyoto: Shirakawa-go gem and Gion gateway

Japan

I checked out and took a one-hour bus journey (¥1600 per person) from Hirayu Onsen to Takayama Nohi Bus Center. In Takayama, I explored Sannomachi Street, known for its traditional buildings. Then, I caught a 55-minute bus to Shirakawa-go, a UNESCO site, after prebooking my ticket two weeks prior.

In Shirakawa-go, I enjoyed views from the Shiroyama Tenshukaku Observation Deck and explored the village, visiting landmarks like Wada House and Ogimachi Suspension Bridge. Afterwards, I took a three-hour bus to Nagoya, followed by a 30-minute Shinkansen ride to Kyoto.

In Kyoto, I stayed at Hotel Wing International Premium Kyoto Sanjo, impressed by its spacious rooms and convenient location near Gion.

Day 9: Kyoto’s charms: Bamboo Forest serenity and Nishiki Market delights

Japan

From Kyoto Station, I took the JR San-in Line to Saga Arashiyama station, about 20 minutes away. A brief 15-minute walk led me to the Bamboo Forest, where admission was free. Meandering through at my own pace, I admired the sunlight filtering through the bamboo canopy.

Next, I visited Tenryu-ji, just a 10-minute walk away, then took a bus to Otagi Nenbutsu-ji Temple, strolling back through Adashino Nenbutsu-ji and Saga Toriimoto Preserved Street.

After a satisfying lunch, I returned to Saga Arashiyama station to catch a train to Kinkaku-ji. Later, I explored Nishiki Market, indulging in various local delicacies.

After a fulfilling day, I returned to the hotel.

Day 10: Kyoto icons: Fushimi Inari and Nara’s deer delight

Japan

The day began with a visit to Fushimi Inari Taisha, famous for its vermilion Torii gates. I took the JR Nara local line from Kyoto to Nara, getting off at Fushimi Inari station, just two stops away. After a 30-minute stroll through the Torii gates, I enjoyed stunning views of Kyoto.

Next, I took the JR Nara Line to JR Nara station, a 45-minute journey. A 15-minute walk led me to Kofuku-ji Temple and Nara Park, known for its free-roaming deer. I also explored Todai-ji Temple, about 1 km away, before indulging in a sweet treat at Daibutsu Ichigo.

After a fulfilling day, I returned to Kyoto by train, reaching my hotel in the evening.

Day 11: Osaka adventures: Yasaka Pagoda and Dotonbori delights

Japan

Starting the day at Hokan-Ji (Yasaka Pagoda), I explored Kyoto’s Higashiyama district, including the unique tatami-floored Starbucks at Kyoto Ninenzaka Yasaka Chaya. Then, I leisurely strolled through the Kiyomizu-dera temple.

Next, I took a 1-hour train to Osaka, enjoying the convenience of the local JR Line. Upon arrival, I stayed at APA Hotel & Resort Osaka Umeda Eki Tower for its central location and comfort.

In the evening, I indulged in the vibrant atmosphere of Osaka’s Kuromon Ichiba Market and Dotonbori, savoring local delicacies amidst colorful displays.

Day 12: Hiroshima and Miyajima: Reflective remembrance

Japan

I embarked on a two-hour Shinkansen journey to Hiroshima Station, followed by a bus ride to Hiroshima Castle. From there, I visited the highly recommended Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Museum. After lunch, I headed to Miyajimaguchi Station, where I caught a 10-minute ferry to Miyajima (Itsukushima) island. I explored Itsukushima Shrine and marveled at the giant Torii gate. Returning via the same route, I caught the last ferry back to Hiroshima at 10 PM before taking the Shinkansen back to Osaka.

Day 13: Osaka: Skyline sensations and nightlife

Japan

I began my day at Osaka Castle, admiring the city views from the observation deck. Next, I explored one of the world’s largest aquariums, Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan. Later, I wandered around Umeda before heading to the Umeda Sky Building (Kuchu Teien Observatory) for a pre-booked sunset experience. The skyline view was stunning. Finally, I ended the day in the lively Dotonbori area for some nightlife.
