During our four-day exploration of Perak with my family, we stumbled upon several hidden gems that proved to be delightful discoveries. Taking a gamble on bringing along our grandmother, we transformed our trip into a truly unforgettable experience, putting its ‘age-friendly’ potential to the test.

Arriving in Perak, we checked into EG Home – The Cove Hillside Residence in Tambun, Ipoh, our cozy base for exploring. With a refreshing swimming pool, a gym, and a scenic canopy walk, the amenities wowed us. We booked two comfy rooms, complete with a kitchen and a cinema projector in the living room, promised a relaxing stay and great for movie nights. I personally loved the minimalist aesthetic that looks something out of Pinterest. Excited for the days ahead, we turned in early, eager for more adventures.

As the sun rose, hunger led us to Miker Pizza, a TikTok recommendation. Ordering not 1… not 2… but 8 pizzas, we feasted like there was no tomorrow. You can imagine the look of the staff’s faces the minute they served our table. But hey, who were complaining?
Later that evening, we went to Gunung Lang, where we took a boat ride to this mini-Island that has a theme park for kids to play or for adults to stroll and explore nature at its best. The island is occupied with a hungry troop of monkeys (beware as they can get a little too friendly). Here, we explored caves, discovering hidden treasures and the beauty of Gunung Lang.
(Tip: Budget RM3 per adult and RM1.50 per child for this trip. Super affordable!)

Today we blended natural wonders and cultural experiences.
At Tasik Cermin aka. the “mirror lake” mesmerized us after a 90-meter-long Miner’s Tunnel, surrounded by limestone hills. You could witness the water’s mirror effects and the magical surrounding for only RM25/adult and RM18/child. However, due to the heavy downpour that occurred shortly after, we didn’t manage to go to Tasik Cermin 2 (Hidden World), due to the rising water level which blocked the tunnel to the other side.
Despite that, we enjoyed the tranquil experience and we found joy in Qing Xin Ling Leisure & Cultural Village’s vintage 60’s and 70’s charm. Riding traditional Chinese rickshaws and tandem bikes, we snapped photos and embraced the timeless old town vibes. (Ps. Locals pay RM12 per person)

For our last day, my family and I decided to explore Gua Kek Look Tong, which I find it be to be one of the best tourist attractions that I highly recommend, despite its remote location. Not only it is known for its breathtaking view of the stunning gardens, but it is believed to be a place of worship among the Buddhists, nestled in the cave between serene lakes at the base of Gunung Rapat.
At first, we were worried about bringing our grandma here, as there was flight of stairs that we needed to take. Fortunately, we were able to utilize the zigzag ramp and a lift allocated in the cave for our grandma, who can sit comfortably on her wheelchair. Indeed it was such a convenience that we didn’t have to worry much whether she would trip on herself or get wobbly feet.
We huddled and took a paddle boat ride along the river with many other tourists and rode bicycles to explore the scenic view of the cave and the beautiful gardens.
PS: the price would be roughly around RM12 for 2 persons or RM20 for 4 people for about 30 minutes ride.
Finally, it was already time to hit the road and get back to our reality, with our hearts full of content. Until next time, this spontaneous escape with the family will remain etched in our hearts as the perfect getaway!
