Absolute Heaven
This beautiful private residence welcomes guests with kindness and civility, the staff are sweet natured and accommodating - they provide delicious food, excellent service and an authentic welcome. It was a rare and treasured experience to stay there.

Peace on earth
The Location, the food, the staff
It was a beautiful time spent there. So tranquil. Wonderful hospitality. Such delicious food. To be at an old colonial estate in the misty mountains was like a dream.

Very bad experience.....
The location and views were stunning; the gardens were beautifully kept; charming, colonial bungalow
First, it was very difficult to find the bungalow in the dark as the sign to the bungalow is not visible coming on the road from Wellawaya. The bungalow manger (based in Colombo) was extremely rude, called our driver "an idiot" and gave us misleading directions. When we found the property we were questioned by two sets of staff about whether we had a proper booking (even though we had booked through Agoda and had called the bungalow Manager several times to confirm our booking). From the beginning the local staff seemed scared, disorganized and not in control. We were staying in a family room in an annex off the main bungalow. The rooms smelt musty and un-aired, as if the room was rarely used. On the first night we ate in the main bungalow with two other guests. We had breakfast in the main dining room again the following day and the staff gave us no information or warning about guests staying in the bungalow that night. When we returned in the early evening my husband requested tea on the veranda. After bringing him a cup of tea, the staff then asked him to leave the veranda of the main bungalow as another family had booked it. Very unfortunately, the staff explained to my husband that the reason for this was religious (the other family were Moslem and they felt uncomfortable having a man on the veranda). The staff then told us that we couldn't eat in the main bungalow dining room that night because of the other family and that we would be served dinner in the annex where we were staying. In the end, we were served our dinner in the drivers' quarters in an upstairs laundry room. Again, the next morning we were prevented from eating our breakfast in the main bungalow. We left as soon as we could feeling very unwelcome and dissatisfied. We had previously lived for three years in Sri Lanka and travelled all round and have never had such a bad experience as Viharagala Bungalow. We would not recommend anyone to book here.

Step back into the colonial era
The bungalow, the delightful staff, stunning views
I never expected to find such a perfect reminder of my childhood in Sri Lanka in the 1940s. Viharagala bungalow has a family atmosphere and is run to a very high standard by it charming staff. Enjoy delicate curries in the dining room or sip tea on the verandah while looking down across the garden over a vast panorama of hills and lakes. This is a magical place.

Lovely Hotel with Excellent View and Great Service
Best view to oversee the tea plantation. Best food we had during our stay in Sri Lanka. Beautiful sunset, beautiful garden.
As soon as we drove in the driveway of the Bungalow, we were so excited for the beautiful garden and sunset view. The building was 100 year ago, but nicely maintaince and excellent designed. Sitting in the living area, we could see the sunset outside the window. It was absolutely stunning! Food was so good, and at a great value. Staff were polit, attentive, and well trained. Definitely will recommend to others, and love to stay there again!

Lovely view
Great service and food
we enjoyed our stay there unfortunately we experienced some power cuts due to bad weather which was rather spuky in a dark 100 year old manor... friendly service and yummy food.

Service with a smile but rooms lacked character
Good views and polite staff
The pictures/description on the web was very beautiful but it failed to mention that we could not use the main common lobby/halls/lawn (as shown on the pictures on web)as it was booked by a a group. Although these areas mentioned were common to all customers we were unable to use them - this was rather disappointing. There were constant power cuts that was replaced by generator power, however the generator was switched off by midnight made our stay difficult as there was no fans and it was hard going to the bathroom in pitch dark. The food was good but the huge dining hall lacked any atmosphere. This hotel was the most expensive hotel we have stayed during our four week tour in Sri Lanka

One of the most stunning locations I've stayed in.
The house, the views, the staff.
A beautiful bungalow in a most stunning setting. Amazing to sit on the veranda and take in the uninhibited views South (apart from a little haze). The Bungalow is immaculate in every way. Hard to believe it's over 100 years old and in such condition. The staff are exactly what I hope for, completely unintrusive but there for anything needed. Food during our stay was limited in choice but very high standard.

Beautiful view and garden, but the price....
beautiful view
The garden is beautiful, but the rooms are very old fashion. Bathroom was at least from the 80's. Rooms big but if you pay $250,- per night you expect a much higher level.
