Secret retreat indeed”
In the lush garden I counted no less than 4 pools and several relax-areas, all for only 18 guestrooms. An oasis of luxury and relaxation, alas too far from any place of interest (beach, shopping, restaurants, city...) and the hotel offers no transport-service nor bikes, so calling for a taxi is the must for even the smallest excursion. Excellent for guests who only want to luxuriate on the premises and have little interest in the other aspects of Bali.

An ubud-like experience in outer Seminyak”
Layout and landscaping, friendly staff
We booked this hotel very last minute, during the super peak new years time so we weren't left with too many choices. We wanted to stay in Seminyak and it was our first visit. We saw that the place was a bit far from the main action, so can't complain about location. It's not in the heart of seminyak and you need to taxi to the main areas of Jln Kayu & Oberoy which takes 10-15 mins. Or ideally - hire a scooter. The hotel has a nice layout, and really nice landscaping. I think there are 4 villas, and each is split into about 2 rooms. Each villa has its own pool and terrace and personal area. Its really nice if you want to hang around and relax, but we were there mainly to go out and explore the shops and bars of Seminyak. You are off the beaten path a bit so you are surrounded by rice paddies and smaller winding roads. The room (deluxe room) is very spacious but a little bit rundown. E.g. there's a really nice big bathtub but neither of us were too keen to actually hop in, it looked a bit rundown. Staff are really friendly and helpful. Very good with arranging taxis and transfers. The manager is out and about in the complex and made many attempts to greet us and check on how things were going. He also made a personal farewell when we were leaving. They are trying to go for that personal touch, I think he just needs to work a bit more on training the other staff to get up to that level. But the rest including front desk is a lovely lady.

Heavenly hotel, hellish restaurant; temporarily?”
space, privacy compound
The good news is that we will be back, hoping that the disastrous quality of the restaurant is only temporarily, as management has reassured us. The lay-out of the hotel is spacious and provides an optimum of privacy. Four sets of large villa's are each spread around a semi-private swimming pool, a spacious lounge and an open air breakfast gazebo. All are lovely furnished with Balinese (mock) antiques, but very tastefully done. The owners must have a passion for curtains, furniture and cushions. Outdoor bathrooms, baleh baleh, frangipane and flowering trees all around, make it a small paradise. That having said, the restaurant is a disaster. The atmosphere of a silverish vau-de-ville 1902 cabaret is completely out of sync with the rest of the hotel. The worst though is the food. Even a hamburger is tasteless, the fries can be folded. The first out of four dishes under the caption 'wonders of the sea'is fish and chips. All alarms should have started to ring then. However, since fake Italian-Aussie food is not of our preference, we tried the Indonesian fare. How disappointing were the fat, oil dripping lumpia's and how utterly tasteless was the nasi goreng, not gurih, not pedas. There is not much more choice. The manager has explained that there will be a new chef from Indonesia as of December 1st, but he, having been a chef himself, should have taken over the giliang and the wok. This is just a shame for the hotel. So, I would have loved to give full marks, but arrive at a weighted average of 4 out of 5.

Honeymoon Highlight”
Stunning pools, fantastic service and luxurious rooms.
This was a highlight of our honeymoon. Don't be put off by the location its actually excellent. The shuttle is easy and free and return cabs are cheap if you get a Bluebird cab (metered fares). The rooms are stunning. The multiple pools made our 4 day stay very enjoyable. We went in low season and had the place nearly to ourselves. The service was VERY good. I had a trouble with my Apple Mac and they sourced a driver and service centre and it was fixed in 2hrs. We also had some tricky luggage transfers which they personally saw too. The massages are great as are the cocktails! Don't hesitate.

Good accomodation, expected better service”
Spacious and relaxing, very nice and comfortable rooms, multiple pools with different theme's
We enjoyed our stay in villa Mathis. The villa's look marvelous and the rooms arer spacious and comfortable. Nice breakfast, friendly staff. So concerning accomodation we have no complaints. We did expected more service/compensation after receiving an aroma therapy massage aranged by the villa, which was not good. The massage itsef was terrible and we've asked the therapist to stop (not concentrated, looked at phone all the time, massaged me with 1 hand and did some pressing) Didn't feel like a massage at all. We've given feedback right after (both to them and the reception) The only thing we got was a written letter with apologies. Also management had 3 more days to come up with something, but no response. At check out we got the bill and a "sorry, we cannot help you" So in short: nice to stay, but wouldn't recommend the massage..........

Beautiful villa's ”
The villa's, staff, gardens
Our stay at Villa Mathis was fantastic. Staff were friendly and attentive. The villa style set up of the resort is beautiful - lots to explore, beautiful gardens, choice of different pools, plenty of areas to relax and enjoy your holiday! Would stay here again

Second Visit and just as fantastic”
Luxury Villas, Staff, relaxation
This is our second time at Villa Mathis and the place really is outstanding. We stayed in a 4 bedroomed villa and from start to finish the service was first class. I look forward to many more stays here. I would recommend this place to all.

Pure relaxation and luxury”
Elegant rooms, quiet surroundings, relaxation
I recommend this villa to everyone. Myself and my husband stayed here for my birthday and the whole area is beautiful. Congratulations to the owners for coming up with such an amazing place. We enjoyed it so much that we have booked to come back with our friends in June. Do not book 5* hotels at twice the price when you can stay here and feel like royalty in your own little oasis of relaxation and luxury.

Charming and great value”
Multiple pools, distinctive accomodation, comtemporary yet relaxed
We stayed for a weekend at Villa Mathis on recommendation from a friend, who knew that Relais de Chateau is a respected brand. Indeed it was a super stay, with excellent rooms and a lush green environment. At around a night it was very good value, although outdoor bathrooms weren't as clean as one would hope for, perhaps a downside of their being exposed to the elements. Service is also famously unrushed. Not ideal if you are someone who wants to stick to a schedule - we wanted breakfast at 7am before an 8.30am horse ride. At 7am it was nowhere to be seen - because it was raining. Rubber time it seems - no-one is in a hurry here, which adds to the relaxed environment. The hotel helped to arrange for a special experience for us - I told them in advance that I intended to propose to my girlfriend over the weekend. They arranged a romantic dinner for us by a poolside, in a villa that was 'privatised' for the evening. There were candles and flower petals Everywhere. It made for an excellent excursion.
