It Says Wacky Stays...Listen To What It Says”
You need to check this out. If you want convention, check out something else. Wacky Stays is a Farmstay experience (help feed the animals) and is therefore a great stay for kids. For adults, if you are adventurous, you'll love this. The location is a couple of k's inland from Kaikoura. They'll send you directions. Don't trust the Satnav. The place consists of open fields with a different stay experience in each; yurt, gypsy caravan, train carriage. The train carriage is the pick of them for us. Saved after the Christchurch earthquakes, this carriage is all polished timber and brass accessories, meticulously restored, full kitchen with full breakfast items provided (farm eggs), a neatly integrated bathroom, a double brass bed in a bedroom at one end, two bunk beds in a kids facility at the other. End platforms and a full front deck. Dressing gowns for all. Sitting area and DVD's. Snow-capped mountain view. Isolated. Farm surroundings. Adventurous. Read the label. Great experience.
THE GOOD FEEDBACK IS COMING SO PLEASE READ TILL THE END!! I will start with the Farmers Cottage as that’s the place we originally booked. It’s not bad for a family with small kids and maybe in the Summer it could be quite nice however in the Winter it’s horrendously cold, it lacks insulation, very hard to heat unless one is a full time fire manager. The place is old, damp smell in the air, decor seriously outdated. Shower was a disaster, hardly any pressure & takes good 10-15 minutes for the hot water to start running & then there’s no middle ground it’s either boiling hot or cold, impossible to moderate it. So after freezing our bums for a night & a day we complained & our needs were met immediately, the staff was beyond attentive, friendly, smiley, eager to accommodate. They tried to fix everything we complained about but after failing to fix the shower they upgraded us to the most amazing unit they have on the farm and that’s The Colonial Wagon - that’s where THE MAGIC began. It’s like a place out of a fairytale. The interior is modern mixed with a hint of last century. It’s warm, comfortable, with breathtaking views, the animals coming straight to our fence eating out of our hand, the outdoor bath heated by real fire underneath, with views to die for, outdoor kitchen & bar-western style, outdoor pizza oven & a wee cute sleep-out for kids that’s so so special - their own tiny house. Overall it’s a unique place seriously worth it experiencing. I can only imagine how amazing it would be in the Summer & looking forward to going back then.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The cottage was adorable and well stocked with wood for the fire. The animals were friendly and a treat to be around. This place would be perfect for a family with kids.
Amazing fun place ”
Super friendly. Beautiful place with fun quirky accomodation
Family reunion - daughter & partner from Uk and wanted to support Kaikoura after EQ- Farmers Cottage”
Worst overnight stay ever, paid $191 .00 for my daughter, partner, youngest daughter and myself for a special get together for one night. I wanted to support Kaikoura because of the EQ 's by staying there instead of anywhere else. We have lived in Christchurch since 2010 and understand what its like to recover from disaster. However, this booking at Wacky Stays was a disaster, there were dead flies on the window sill, the grey nets had holes in them, walls had muddy marks or holes in them. It stated in booking breakfast was supplied, we assumed it would be a nice English Breakfast (bacon, eggs, etc.)with it being a farm, but no it was Cornflakes, Porridge and 6 eggs and loaf of bread due to expire the next day.,there was also a small tub of jam and milk. Dressing gowns , slippers were supplied, but they old shabby dressing gowns and old slippers with worn holes in the sole. Bedding looked clean but due to the dirty condition of the cottage we slept on worn out sofa in front of fire.
I tried the colonial wagon, it was pretty cool. However, it rained the two days while I was there, pretty much ruined my stay because I mainly wanted to play with the animals.
Gorgeous place to take kids”
Our stay in the Colonial Wagon was amazing. It is expertly crafted and the owner/creator rightfully proud. We would return in a heartbeat.
A relaxing and easy overnighter on our way up the coast. The yurt was comfy and warm, the modern bathroom facilities were welcome too. Fresh eggs and toast for brekky we're a bonus.
Staying at Wacky”
Electricity supply not sufficient, rainwater supply for the kitchen not enough. Very good and close proximity to animals (they come right up to your door) Tippee tent entrance hard to manage. Bathrobes very useful but there were stains. toilet and bathroom were tiptop. other group members who stayed at Yurt said it was unbearably cold in the wee hours of the morning. This is although they closed the opening at the rooftop of the Yurt.
quirky stay in kaikoura”
rooms are interesting with all comforts provided for. animals were interesting but surroundings could be tidier.
great for kids”
We enjoyed our stay very much. Lots to do for our youngsters, playing inside, outside and seeing all the animals. It was to busy for us, to take part on feeding the animals in the morning, but enjoyed the park later. Great place to be with children, as they can run around and all is fenced in. Our kids are 2 and 4 and they loved it. We enjoyed to have a breakfast supply, with cornflakes, oats, sandwich, butter, homemade jam and eggs from their chicken. Thank you.
Great experience ”
Very enjoyable. We used the outside kitchen facilities and had a lovely BBQ. Tipi was cosey and had a fantastic night sleep. Staff where not very friendly.
