"Great staff, amazing room for the price, was impressed"

Behind a grand Victorian façade, this property exudes elegance and history close to the shops and cafes of George Street. A 10-minute walk from the Octagon, the city's picturesque center point, Wains Hotel Dunedin is a classy establishment handy for urban sightseeing. Interiors feature subtle hues, and smart contemporary lines contrast against ornate period detailing with an original caged elevator adding to the charm. In terms of nightlife, the hotel is only a block away from the casino, and cabs are readily available on Princes Street for quick access to restaurants and bars out of walking range. Staff is well-educated on Dunedin's attractions and happy to help organize tours or plan driving itineraries along the region's beautiful coastline.
"Well conserved and maintained building both in and outside."

Even though we had a special rate we didn’t expect our room to be no bigger than an attic. ”
We were on the top floor right by the lift so every time it was used we heard it rattle. We have stayed here often and this was the worse experience which is really disappointing but maybe that’s what you get with the special room rate we got, however our son and partner had the room beside and it was twice the size for same price??
Spacious and beautiful”
Clean and spacious. Great for couple or family.
We stayed the guest room, it was dark all day and no views. We were fine, just because we need the beds for the night... 2 double beds and the linen was good quality, had a good sleep. Water pressure is good for the 4th floor.
Nice staff, central location, historic building, free breakfast was awesome”
Building was old but clean. Staff very friendly. Free breakfast included full menu for all four guests in our room. Very well value for money. Within walking distance to central city. Free parking after 6pm in front of hotel
Old hotel up dated recently work still needed”
We stayed in a superior room (2 double beds) for a wedding held there. The main complained is that the hotel had in adequate heating in the building so in the reception hall it was very cold indeed and in the room only had a oil bar heaters by power.
lift is not the same floor with our room”
being a family with small kid, i was really surprised that our room is not at the same floor with the lift, so we literally have to take our heavy luggage using stairs. the room is okay..but i wouldnt recommend this hotel to family with kids and older people.
unique and cosy hotel”
Enjoyed our stay, the room was clean and cosy. Location was central yet away from the Octagon which was where the evening noise was situated. Staff were friendly and accommodated any requests. Would stay again.
A historical building that gives a great feeling of touching the past. ”
Excellent location. Well conserved and maintained building both in and outside. We booked in a superior twin for a family of 4. Spacious room with 2 queen's beds were enough to stay in feeling easy. Bathroom was clean. WiFi was strong. Breakfast was very good. I really love the elevator of Worldwar age that was still in good service. I really much appreciate this hotel and will definitely come back again if I have a chance to come to Dunedin again.
Quirky and comfortable”
An old style hotel - it has been refurbished and was a great place to stay for our purposes. Some people might prefer the glass high-rise style avaible elsewhere, but for us the character of the place was a major attraction
No, I would not stay here again”
Even though the room was quite large, it was definitely far from nice. Quite dated, and rather odd, fabric feature wall above the bed had burn marks from wall lights?! It actually made me wonder whether or not it was save to switch them on, it wasn't very pleasant to look at. Staff at the reception was not particularly welcoming, rather indifferent. As it was Xmas day, we had some champagne that we wanted to have in the room, called for a bucket of ice from room service (by the way room service menu is frankly pathetic, nachos?! Really?), the person on the phone said that they will deliver the ice, we called back an hour later, and the person said that they were "making" the ice, and will bring it soon. We watched TV till about midnight and went to bed without no ice or phone call that it wasn't coming. We ordered continental breakfast in room, it was as well rather sad - for 20-25$ whatever it was, you can definitely have a much nice breakfast in a Cafe somewhere. Thanks Wains
The staff were very friendly and helpful, the breakfast was very nice. Though they didn’t serve any other meals there were plenty of other restaurants nearby The room we had was a good size so could easily relax in comfort. We would certainly stay there again without any hesitation.
So Modern and Amazinf ”
The staff were so helpful, it was overbooked so the house put me into the scenic, but I came back and my room was so nice though the room service could offer more food options, I would definitely go back very historic and modern at the same time
Dirty, Old, Horrible bed, Terrible experience”
Bed was like sleeping on rocks and room was very dirty - especially the bathroom. Sink didn't drain at all (so just kept filling up), other peoples rubbish was left in the bins, shower leaked, no air-con, shampoo etc. looks like it gets refilled rather than replaced, bathroom was disgustingly dirty (hair, mould, dirt, stains etc.). Considering the price this was by far the worst place I have stayed in Dunedin. The fact it is listed as a 4 star hotel is an absolute joke. 2 star backpackers at best.
Apart from not being able to find car parking space at the start everything else was great. Distance from theatre within walking distance, room service was prompt and staff super polite and friendly. No problem with traffic or street noise.
Good value for money”
We had an interior facing room on the 6th floor, which means the window went into a space between different hotel buildings, offering no view but perfect quietness. The room was very large and clean with 2 double beds, a sitting area off to the side and a corner with the fridge/tea making facilities through which to access the bathroom. The bathroom was modern and clean. I particularly liked the fridge without mini-bar, giving you space to chill some of your own food and drinks. We did not eat at the Park Regis. My only nitpick would be with the Internet. In 2015 you expect free wifi in any motel, and certainly in a 4-star hotel! The Park Regis offers wifi only in the lobby and at dial-up speeds. In the rooms you can get wired Internet for $25 per day. Only when I inquired about the Internet at check-in, the staff did not tell us this, requiring us to visit one of the close-by Internet cafes in the dark of night. My wife would not been comfortable doing so by herself considering there are several massage parlours and night clubs surrounding the hotel.
Close to conference centre.”
Overall pleasant. The chandelier in the foyer could do with a good thourough clean up, especially the crystals/glass as it looked grubby, also, it is in a desparate need of repair. I can't really rate the hotel for food as I didn't use this service and there were no 'not applicable' option.
Great old design Hotel but needs some renovations”
Park Regis Hotel Dunedin was formerly managed by Mercure Hotel group. There was still a plaque and many things inside the hotel still represented Mercure group but had not been changed by the new management company. The exterior of the hotel was very nice and the lobby area was also very nice. The rooms itself was large and clean but the noise of the floor boards and sound proofing could be looked at. We could constantly hear large thuds from kids jumping up and down from the above floors which seemed to be like an earthquake. On basically the same block was the Dunedin Casino and a further 5-8 mins walk is the Octagon where there are many restaurants/bars to choose from. The Cadbury chocolate is also near the octagon and well worth joining a tour of the factory especially for chocolate lovers. All in all, the hotel was ok but beware the sound proofing if looking for a real comfortable nights sleep. There are many other hotel options nearby also.
Comfortable accommodation, very friendly staff”
I had a brief overnight stay for family reasons after several days travelling for work. I enjoyed the heritage exterior features of the hotel; the easy walking to work places, cafes, shopping and to visit family. Loved the quality evening meal in the cafe bar. I was able to relax and rest as well as to enjoy the city. The staff arranged a shuttle to the airport and looked after my luggage well after check out.
Small room but great for City Centre”
Only stayed 1 night but room was clean and well kept if on the small size.Probably not suited for a couple or family on a long stay but i guessed this anyway.Very little parking but for 15 dollars the staff looked after my car which for a city center was not a problem.Great location,1 min walk to casino and Speights brewery tour.Several small bars and cafes near by if you didnt want to eat in the hotel.Overall for a couple staying one or two days I would recommend this hotel.
Clean and central”
Nice Hotel with super cheap parking!! Free over night! Very nice room, although I needed google maps to find my way from the lobby to my room. It was quite a labyrinth. Really nice staff and a good tidy room is all you can ask for really. Great value for money as the hotel with the casino in is 50 meters down the road but alot more expensive.
