First room the toilet was broken, changed my room to room the seriously smelled like an ashtray, I woke up sick with throat pain (after horrible night sleep) on top of that the room wasn't clean. Breakfast I had nothing to eat, because I'm not Chinese (no problem with Chinese at all, but it's not a western food...). I'm not planning to go again to Maesai but if I will I wouldn't stay there again for sure. Oh, the room for sure doesn't worth 1,100 bhat.

Excellent hotel near Myanmar-Thailand border ”
The hotel was easy to find and had plenty of car parking space. Staff were great throughout our stay, check-in was prompt and room service was quick. The buffet had a fairly generous spread of toast with jam, cake, tea/coffee, juices, warm Thai soups, rice and curries even though the hotel was fairly deserted. The Wang Thong rooms were comfortable with soft but supportive mattresses, a tub in the bathroom, and separate modern A/C. We opted for rooms with a Thai view (less expensive than a view of Myanmar) and as it turns out, the views on either side are fairly similar. Our main reason for visiting was to cross the border and extend our tourist visas, but we wanted to stay overnight with the kids to give ourselves plenty of time. At such affordable rates and with such lovely staff we were very happy we did.

Review”
There seem to have been some changes in management and in turn the running of Wang Thong Hotel. We had no problems with staff or the rooms, which were clean and comfortable. We only had breakfast in the hotel proper and it can be as substantial as you wish to make it - there are mostly Thai dishes available but also eggs and toast. The outside bar is well served and meals can be ordered there - we had fried rice and other dishes which were very good. The hotel is located very close to the northern entry from Myanmar and directly across the road from the huge market area. That has also undergone some change and there are good coffee shops and restaurants in there, all at reasonable prices. Well worth a weekend away it is a short drive from Chiang Rai and a three hours plus drive from our home in Lampang.

Strange hotel in a strange town”
It seems a bit unfair to criticise a hotel that provides basic but OK accommodation in a town that notably lacks anything better, or indeed much at all. But Wang Thong is still a bit odd. It comes across as a palatial business hotel but reality defies appearance. It seems to be run on a shoestring with a handful of staff, who mostly look bewildered. The rooms are better than earlier reviewers have suggested, as the aircon and hot water systems have been upgraded (though you have to puzzle out how the new shower works). Beds are OK. Breakfast is dire. But let's give credit where due. On a wet Sunday evening, the Wang Thong came up with a decent supper when everywhere else was closed. So if you're stuck in Mae Sai, this is the place to stay. But moving south is probably your best bet.

Perfect for crossing the border”
This is a border hotel where most people stay just 1 or 2 nights - it is therefore catering for short and very short stay only and for this it is very good value for money in an ideal situation. The staff, including porter and security men were really helpful as I had a bad leg at the time. The room was fine and the price for the room with just a fan just right - there was even a large mosquito net had I needed it. The breakfast was adequate for a westerner and the bar facilities, although small, nice and easily accessible. I would stay there again without any6 hesitation.

Regret staying here - only did so because we were traveling with a young child”
Even a couple of weeks after staying here, I still regret my last minute decision to book this hotel. It was 6pm and we had only traveled from the Golden Triangle starting around 3pm, visiting the farm overlooking the cave where the boys were trapped - turns out that the BBC and other media who used the farm for their vantage point during the cave rescue just left the previous day. However, Channel Nine News Australia stayed at this hotel for their last night and departed around the same time as us, 8am, for Chiang Rai. The hotel is old and shabby, it might have been good back in the 80s when it opened but hasn't seen much if any renovation since then. Breakfast was a disaster, the rooms were overpriced (1600 Baht for a family room, that's only worth 800? come on), the lifts were old and slow, the wallpaper was starting to peel. Wifi was pretty hopeless too. On the positive side, the beds were big and comfortable, there was a new TV and the staff were fantastic.

Great Location”
This hotel is perfectly located on the Thailand border. My hotel room overlooked the border crossing and was in a perfect location for being able to make a border run.

First Time Visitor to Mae Sai”
One major issue is no internet reception in my room on the 7th floor although hotel claim of free WIFI in the room. Second major issue is no hot water because water flow was insufficient to activate the instant hot water heater on my 7th floor room.No issue with me with cold water shower. I brought to her attention on the day of departure and explain to Reception staff that it was due to insufficient water pressure at the 7th floor. Overall my stay is quite satisfactory except with the need to go to the Reception lobby to surf the internet.

A fancy hotel very close to the boarder”
I guess this hotel must be superb before, it's grand and big..but now it's bit out of fashion. Anyway, it's still kinda the best in this area. there is a nice pool where you can spend those hot evenings. the only inconvenience was that the staff couldnt speak much english:(

old, but good location”
30 years ago, this hotel must have been a perfect loction. Now it is old and not many renovations have been done. The location is perfect, if one wants to go to Myanmar, as the way to the customs house is 30 seconds! The breakfast is very simple.

A stay in Massi”
The staff were more than helpful but the hotel is tired and needs some TLC. In typical thai style nothing is removed when faulty just replaced, eg hot water in shower and air conditioner in the room. The pool area needs cleaning and some new furniture would be good.

overall ok location”
every hotels around this area is old. This hotel is probably the best out of so few which gives you good location to the market and cheap jade wholesaler. But Mae Sai is a place that belongs to the 80s. Anyway I love Mae Sai so its fine. Can't find a nice place to drink at night is awefull!!!

One night only”
We stayed in basic room and it was very basic. Definitly suitable for one night only. Location is great, right next to the border crossing and market. Maybe higher priced rooms are ok but this one was over priced for what it was. There are other hotels less expensive that are close and could not be any more basic than this.. Having said this we would probably stay here again for one night if only for the location.

Do not expect much and you will be fine”
Outdated, dingy, building. Maybe it was just our room but it was depressing! Paper thin towels, faucets tha sprayed every way but down, not even o pot to boil water for coffee in the morning. Just a dismal place. Breakfast was cold eggs and cold sausage. I truly think they cooked them the night before and put in fridge. Ants crawling all over the sugar bowl. Truthfully the worst place I ever booked . We moved to another hotel near Chiang Rai 4 days, even though my money was non-refundable.

Honesty won our Praise!”
Generally nothing to boast about as normal border 3 -Star hotel but the staff are very honest as we left our Blackberry charging in the room and forgotten to take it with us until we reach airport realise the phone was in the hotel room. We called the hotel but the staff was some how helpful but no housekeeping around to answer our Lost & Found of the phone or not? Nevertheless, the next day the Front office staff checked and despatch by EMS post to us in Bangkok.
