Quaint little ryokan with impeccable hospitality.”
Watazen Ryokan provided a highly affordable Ryokan style accommodation without breaking the bank. Staff were extremely friendly and provided the most personalized service I had ever experienced throughout my 16 day stay in Japan. Counter and room service staff remembered my ability to understand Japanese (despite me being a foreigner) and communicated with me in Japanese thoroughout my stay which added a lot to the experience of staying in a Ryokan. As my access to Kokedera was reserved through Watazen, it was nice that the counter staff took the initiative to ask if I enjoyed Kokedera upon my return as well. I had a marvelous Kaiseki dinner on my 2nd night of stay in Watazen and was greeted by the owner of the ryokan during my meal in my room. In overall, Watazen was the highlight of my trip in Japan and would definitely be my accommodation of choice the next time I return to Kyoto.

Perfect”
Watazen Ryokan is a couple of blocks away from Nishiki market, which is one of the most wonderful parts of Kyoto, since there is food and shopping at walking distance. It is a beautiful, traditional Ryokan with exquisite attention to detail in the decoration and towards its visitors. They gave us beautiful cotton robes and sandals to hang out in the Ryokan and I also wore them to the onsen bath which they have in the basement. The onsen experience was wonderful, clean and very hot, but incredible soothing for my aching feet and amazing right before going to sleep. I stayed at the Ryokan with my 11 year old son and the attendants were very kind and respectful. They are not fluent in English, but know the essentials which are necessary to communicate with travelers. They offer you a great mini map which shows where the main train /metro lines are to get to the main attractions around Kyoto like the Bamboo Forest and Fushimi Inari. No beds, just tatami. We loooooooooved it!

Nice Hotel, Friendly hotel staff, Great Location”
The hotel is located right in the center of Kyoto city. Walking distance to Nishiki Food Market & Gion. The traditional Japanese hotel room is nice & clean. Hotel staff is nice & friendly. They are so kind to lead us to their recommended car-park which is few streets away from hotel building & fetch us with our luggage to the same car-park on our check-out. The Kaiseki dinner & Shabu Shabu dinner was served at hotel room & tasted great ! The staff will set the bed after dinner. This is our first experience in staying at traditional Japanese ryokan & Watazen Ryokan gave us great experience.

good location and amenities”
Stayed for only a night. Location was perfect, near Nishiki market and near the subway station. The room was very spacious and comfortable. Cleanliness was alright but could be improved. There is a public bath at the basement..Bicycle rentals were also available. Watazen ryokan provided a convenient base for exploring Kyoto. We were out most of the time but hoped we could have more nights to enjoy. Perhaps next time. Recommend!

Nice location, cleanliness and very friendly staff”
Watazen Ryokan is located closely to the market, even it is not close to the Kyoto station but it is very easy to travel and accessed. It is very clean and we get the very warm welcome from the staff, helpful and so kind, Watazen is decorated in homey style & feel. I like it very much.. If i have chance to go to Kyoto again, i will surely come back here.

Beautiful facilities and pleasant atmosphere”
Staff was friendly and helpful. The facilities were convenient and clean; we especially loved the onsen-style bath on the basement level. The hotel provides yukata and other free goodies in the lobby which was a nice touch. The location is great and the atmosphere is warm. If you have it in the budget, I would highly recommend booking Watazen Ryokan Hotel.

Great Ambiance and Homey”
I love this ryokan. We booked 3 rooms. It's quiet new since it's newly renovated so it doesn't have that old feel. So we get best of both worlds, clean and new plus traditional style. It even includes a booklet that explains the different parts of a ryokan room which I think was cool. Toilet was ok, much better with a modern shower booth which I think was excellent option compared to most hotel toilets. The price is a bit on the high side, but given the newly renovated rooms, I think it's quite worth it. We did not get a chance to have breakfast or dinner in, since we already tried the traditional meals elsewhere. Location, a bit hard to find, but we asked around, and the locals are so kind to help us find the hotel even if it was out of their way. Just a few blocks and you're in the main shopping area of Kyoto, where you can find restaurants, shops, Nishiki Food Market, and train and bus stops. Very convenient indeed and it was interesting to see the modern main center turn into old style Japanese streets in just a turn of a corner. Staff were excellent, they were very helpful and friendly and spoke great English.

Our first Ryokan experience”
Our first ryokan experience. A very knowledgable front desk manager (an elderly guy- forgot his name). Very spacious, comfortable, good attention to detail,a lovely gesture of sweets every day. Ryokan also has an onsen. Location wise, within walking distance to Nishiki market. Need to walk a bit further to the train station though. Also located near a great yakitori place. If you have kids, do think of a ryokan esp those which are family friendly like Watazen

Affordable Ryokan Expererince in Kyoto”
We enjoyed an affordable Ryokan stay at the Watazen. Good location in central Kyoto near Gion and many, many restaurants within 10-15 minutes. The baths are nice and hot, and we were enthusiastic about the staff and the breakfast. The futons are not all that thick, and so we slept a little less well (even though we like hard mattresses).

You need to stay in a ryokan while in Japan.”
Watazen Ryokan Hotel was a great experience. The staff really went out of their way to help us. Staying in a ryokan is an experience that everyone should try while traveling in Japan. We appreciated their attention to our bedding and bringing us nightly tea.

Unmatched Service”
My girl friend and I spent two weeks traveling through Japan and Watazen was our favorite stay. As soon as we entered, we were greeted kindly and had all of our questions answered. The staff was knowledgeable, detailed and very professional. They helped us call for restaurant reservations and even helped us with a UPS package that was delivered incorrectly. The room was spacious and clean. The Japanese style room was comfortable and calming. When we returned from our day out, we would find tea and snacks waiting for us. After we returned from dinner, the futons were set for us. The location was amazing. Everything was within walking distance or an easy commute away with the subway station so close and the buses around the corner. Only a block away from Nishiki Market. Next time we come back to Kyoto, I would definitely stay here again

Traditional ryokan in the heart of Kyoto!”
Awesome ryokan. Very much on the traditional side, with some modern amenities like fully upgraded washrooms and flat screen television etc. The rooms themselves are quite large, even the 'smaller' rooms which is one we stayed in. Plenty of room to move around and lay out your luggage. We really loved the area that this ryokan was in as well. It's surrounded by several shopping streets like Nishiki and Teramichi, and tons of restaurants and bars are steps away. The street itself was overall quiet with a bit of welcome bustle during the day. Staff are very friendly and helpful, and there appears to always be someone at the front desk. You do have to leave your room key with them whenever you leave the ryokan (even if you're going out for the day or just going to eat), but the front desk attendant would always remember which room was ours. Looking forward to staying here again next time we come to Kyoto!

Great modern ryokan experience”
Ryokans are expensive but it's nice to get the peaceful authentic experience and I recommend it for at least one night of your trip. This one was very clean and nice. The public bath was a great intro to the onsen experience. They provided yukata (kimonos) to wear and tea upon arrival. Very central location. Wifi was not very strong but enough for the basics. I recommend Watazen!

Value for money, comfortable, good location”
Had a lovely 2-night stay with two friends. It is not easy to find a 3-room (or family room) in Kyoto during Xmas New Year period in these popular Japanese traditional Inns, esp. one with private bathroom as many ryokans have only shared bathrooms. The room we had is quite a sizable one with enough space for 3 tatami decently spread out. Room and bathroom is small but extremely clean. Best part is the location, so easy to get to any place of interest, which are the must-sees in Kyoto.

A great ryokan suited to the experience of Kyoto”
Located at a convenient location near to the Nishiki market, though a bit of distance away from buses and mrt, but it only helps to bring the peace and quietness that is best to experience what it is like staying in a Ryokan. Service was friendly and accommodating, with the hosts knowing how to pamper you after a day of exploring the artistic city of Kyoto, with a public bath ready at night to wash away your tiredness. Expect the best of hospitality as the traditional Japanese rooms comes with traditional bath robes, tea sets and facilities. And the fusion of traditional japanese style and contemporary westernised living lets you feel extra comfortable. A pity we only managed to stay for a short while here and definitely would have made this the choice for our next trip for an even longer stay.

Great Location”
My sister and I were looking for a Ryokan that would provide a traditional Japanese experience with a good location in Kyoto. Which this Ryokan did. The reception desk was helpful in answering our questions about the area and transportation. We were greeted in our room by a woman dressed in a kimono who served us tea. The room was big enough for three people and clean. It was a surprise to find our futons all laid out for us after a long day of sightseeing. This Ryokan had a good location in Central Kyoto. It was close to the bus stations and subway. As well as near to a shopping district, Nishiki market, Ponticho and Gion. The downside was that breakfast was not included and there was no onsen. Though there is a public bath. All in all this was a great place to stay and I would definitely go back.

Worth what I paid for”
My experience was quite good at this ryokan. Its no fancy hotel nor a very traditional ryokan but we liked the simplicity of the Japanese style room we got. It is very very close to nishiki market so we got to eat all the street food we wanted. The staff were quite nice and helpful. And a few of them spoke English well. The Japanese breakfast set we ordered was wonderful , and we got to have breakfast at the dining hall using the hotel-provided robes for a truly 'local feel'. As a bonus, they even have a public onsen at the basement of the ryokan which guests could use for free.

Great Ryokan”
Welcome gifts by your lucky(how many persons check in then Watazen will send corresponding chances). And Watazen also provide free bread, coffee and tea as staying guests' breakfast. Watazen close Nishiki market and Shinkyogoku street. Not far from Gion, by walk.

Very Central yet Quiet”
This ryokan is very new, we heard it was newly renovated. They put modern shower booths instead of the typical tiny bathtubs that most Japanese hotels have. We like this better. Besides, if you want a bath, you can go try their public bath, a must experience in Japan :-) Location couldn't be better, it is in a quiet street, yet it's just a few blocks to the main street where you can find restaurants, shopping, bus stops, train stations, etc. Nishiki Food Market is just a few blocks away too, although I wish the market was open earlier than 9am, would be a good quiet walk in the morning, especially if you don't stay in hotel or breakfast.

Very good value ryokan!”
The value they offer was good! the place was quite old, but well-maintained and good location. Kyoto Gogyo is just a few doors away (a must try Black Burnt Ramen) and Nishiki Market 5-mins walk away for breakfast. We didn't have time to try the onsen but will definitely come back to this ryokan again if we come back to Kyoto one day!
