Hangzhou Xihu State Guest House
West Lake District - West Lake Scenic Area,West Lake District - West Lake Scenic Area - View on map
"Me and my boyfriend visited Hangzhou during Easter break and stayed at Xihu State Guest House for 2 days. It was a pleasant stay - the hotel was converted from two mansion houses built in 1900s. The hotel itself is like a big garden, with trees, flowers, pavilions and even direct and exclusive access to West Lake. Room is clean and comfortable. The Chinese restaurant in the hotel serves first-rate authentic Hangzhou-style cuisine and the buffet-style breakfast offers a wide variety of Western and local Hangzhou choices. The hotel is located on the more quiet side of West Lake, so a stroll down Yanggongdi outside hotel is also highly recommended. The only drawback is the challenge to get a taxi in the West Lake area - so make full use of public transport if you can. "

Zhejiang Xizi Hotel

"Took my parents to visit Hangzhou. Glad that I booked Xizi hotel. The ground is one of most beautiful garden in China with pleasant smell of fragrant tea olive in October. It has very long shoreline of West Lake and great views of most sightseeing points of the lake. Staffs are very friendly and helpful. They transported us to and from different gates since any time we needed. They also helped us to get taxi. Fresh fruits are provided everyday. We also get snacks for afternoon tea. Buffet breakfast is amazing with huge choices and great quality. Unfortunately, we didn't have time enjoying the Gym and swimming pool. They also provided one hour free tour of the hotel. I learned a lot of the hotel history from the tour. It is the best location for all sightseeing and restaurants. Highly recommended. I will stay here next time I visit Hangzhou."

Rock & Wood Cozy House
West Lake District - West Lake Scenic Area,West Lake District - West Lake Scenic Area - View on map
"We had a perfect stay at Lao Cai's cosy inn. Spent 3 nights in the Queen room on the 1st floor, which had heated flooring, a cute nook at the corner of the room to relax in, and beautiful indoor plants. The decoration around the inn was beautiful and thoughtfully designed, to make guests comfortable and at home. Breakfast everyday was perfect, with Lao Cai and his crew whipping up simple yet delicious dishes that reminded you of home cooked meals. He would even make you a cuppa good coffee (with legitimate coffee art) using his coffee machine. The surrounding neighborhood is at a quaint and peaceful part of West Lake, arguably more beautiful that the Eastern side of the lake which is very commercialized and crowded with tourists. The location is perfect for a morning stroll around the lake (just 2 mins away), or it also has convenient access to the tea plantations/scenic area on the hills behind the Inn. There is also a small convenience store just 1min away which serves the local neighborhood and is very well stocked. Will definitely opt to stay at Lao Cai's Inn again if I am back in Hangzhou! "

Hangzhou Sofitel Westlake Hotel

"Excellent location, right next to West Lake. We can go anywhere in West Lake either on foot or by taxi under RMB 20. Lots of good restaurants nearby. The room is clean and spacious. There has been some issues with the flushing system, but the staff fixed it immediately. My only concern is the man-made fragrance fhey use in the hotel lobby, which I guess is to get rid of the smell of smoke. But the hotel is vey good in general, especially given the low price. "

More about West Lake District - West Lake Scenic Area

West Lake has been central to tourism in Hangzhou for centuries. Marco Polo visited 700 years ago, and today’s tourists retrace his steps around this beautiful, manmade body of water. Many of the people booking accommodation in West Lake District arrive directly from Shanghai, whether they’re residents on a weekend trip or international tourists on their first venture onto Mainland China.

The ‘Ten Scenes of West Lake’ were collected in the days of the Southern Song Dynasty, and each is marked so that visitors can enjoy them. Many of these require coming at a set time, like ‘Lei Feng Pagoda in evening glow’ or ‘Melting snow at broken bridge’. The tourism bureau recently added ten more of their own, so today’s visitors can also ‘Enjoy tea at Dragon Well Village’ or view the ‘Sunny and rainy lakeside’ or the ‘Precious stone hill floating in Rosy Cloud’. The last one is a reference to a particular hillside at sunset where the boulders seem ready to lift off.

Other sites around the include Yellow Dragon Cave where Song-Dynasty Chinese would pray for rain, and the 4th-century Ling Yin Temple. The latter is one of China’s oldest temples and has been rebuilt more than 15 times. South of the lake is Xihu Tian Di, an attractively landscaped cultural center added a few years ago.

Wushan Square has a pagoda overlooking the lake, with walking trails that explore the hillside. Farther east is He Fang Street, a lively pedestrian area with merchants selling souvenirs and snacks. After sunset, the action shifts to Nanshan Road, with its late-night bars and pubs. Several hotels in West Lake District are close enough to Nanshan Road for tourists to safely walk home after dark.
