Its location, off of Central Park West, provides quick and easy access to many of the city's popular attractions and venues. The guest rooms at the West Side YMCA Hostel are basic with standard amenities like satellite television. Even though there are no onsite restaurants at the YMCA, there are several local delis, cafes and eateries within walking distance. Fitness fanatics will be quite pleased with the athletic facilities at the hotel as there are two pools, a massive fitness center equipped with basket ball courts, racquetball courts, and steam and sauna rooms. Carnegie Hall and the Museum of Natural History are located very close to the hotel along with the Lincoln Center. Be sure to take a stroll through the gorgeous Central Park while staying at the YMCA Westside Hotel. Like being in college again!”
The West Side YMCA was exactly what I needed during my NYC visit! My single room was small but pleasant. It included a desk and chair, wifi, a comfortable bed, a window, a closet, an air conditioner/fan unit, and a small flatscreen TV. Housekeeping changed the sheets daily and provided a fresh towel every day or every other day. The bathrooms down the hall were generally quite clean, with three toilet stalls, three working faucets (and one that didn't work), and three shower stalls. Guests are invited to attend group exercise classes and use the swimming pool during open swim times (swim cap required), though I didn't have a chance to take advantage of these offerings. The location is stellar--within a short walk of Lincoln Center, the Upper West Side, Central Park, the American Museum of Natural History, a variety of restaurants, Midtown, and the various subways stopping at 59th Street-Columbus Circle. My only complaint is that only one shower stall had a decent shower head; the other two were like taking a shower using a fire hose: lots of pressure, but stinging!
A good option near to Broadway action ..”
I've taken to stopping over in New York on a Saturday night to take in a Broadway, when traveling from Europe to the US on business. Staying at the West Side YMCA Hostel has twice now been a good experience. The Hostel is on Broadway, and a 20 minute walk, or one or two NY Metro stops, to most Broadway or Off-Broadway theaters.
How to get to Sesame Street...”
West 63rd and Broadway was recently renamed Sesame Street in celebration of the show's golden anniversary. It's a fantastic location with easy access to buses and the subway at Columbus Circle. I stayed in a single room with air con, a tv and fridge as well as storage space and a desk. The bed linen was clean, towels were provided daily and I felt safe at all times in there. If you don't have $250 a night to spend on a half decent hotel room then the YMCA (or just "The Y") on 63rd is the place for you. Excellent value for money with water stations to fill your bottle, a small shop selling food and drink at reasonable prices, a gym and TWO swimming pools that guests have access to. There's a corridor of shared bathrooms (toilet, shower cubicle, sink in each one) that are kept clean with ample hot water. Basic, but for what they charge, it's a bargain! Be aware that you'll be charged $10 a day membership, but it still means you're getting great value for money.
The YMCA West Side hostel was very clean with a prime location and friendly staff.
great location but small rooms...great staff...”
i always stay at the west side y....for the price it is the best deal in nyc......too bad they closed the restaurant.......
Will stay again”
The Westside YMCA was perfect for a place to sleep and shower in NYC, which is exactly what we were looking for. The price is unbeatable in the city and the location is excellent. If your looking for spacious or comfort, you won't be pleased because it is college dorm style rooms, but if function and price are what you want, this is the place to stay.
Great stay, fantastic location, would recommend to those on a budget”
Pros: • Fantastic central Manhattan location just a short walk from 59th St/Columbus Circle subway stop & Central Park. • Great price considering location & you get your own room. • Clean throughout the property including communal restrooms. • Staff were friendly and helpful when required. • Considering you're in central Manhattan, I didn't find there to be too much street noise. Potential cons: • Bed was fairly comfortable but (as clearly advertised) was a single. At 6'2 tall and broad shouldered, it was snug. I was comfy but some may find it difficult. • Shared bathrooms is fine, I had no issues but I was up showering by 6.30am, got busier by 7am. • Didn't have the communal feel of a traditional hostel, but that may well be a pro for lots of people! I had a fantastic stay & would recommend highly. Perfect for budget solo travel.
West Side Y a budget place”
The West Side Y is a good place for the price, but don't expect any amenities. The bed and room were clean, the shared bathrooms weren't too bad, the mini-cafeteria had little to offer, but you could get wireless in the dining hall if you sat next to the window. I had meetings at the New York Atheletic Club at the south end of Central Park, and for a ten-minute walk between there and the Y I saved $200 over a night at the NYAC.
Great location but small rooms”
I stayed at the YMCA to prepare for and run the New York City marathon. The location as perfect and the gym facilities were very convenient.
I stayed at the West Side YMCA Hostel for only one night, but it was the worst night ever. The staff was not rude but whenever I was approaching them with basic questions(I had to because they didn't explain anything when I was checking in), the facial expressions of the ladies at the reception were not friendly, rather highly annoyed and bored. The hostel is very big and crowded. My room was located at the 9th floor. The noise coming from the ventilation outside was unbearable. The moment I entered the room I realized immediately that the night was going to be sleepless and requested to be moved elsewhere. They did move me, however, the new room was at the same floor, same noisy.I haven't slept the whole night. The location is good, so if you are not planning to sleep but prefer to explore the night life of NY instead, this offer might suite you.Otherwise, you may be too tired to enjoy the sights a step away.
Location is excellent, close to Columbus Circle subway. There are food stalls underground which is great, lots of Asian food to choose from. YMCA facilities are top notch, glad i can use the gym and swim in the same place.
very good staff...my friend stayed in a nice stay in times square and i met her there a few times. I can honestly say that the staff at YMCA from management to cleaning staff were 10 times nicer...no attitude...lovely stay..xxx
nice location near central park”
the place near from everywhere, especially if you wanna explore New York in very short days, also its has good atmosphere and hospitality
It was a good experience staying at YMCA”
Pros - Affordable, near Central Park, 30 minutes walking to Time square and Bus station (NY Trailways). Good staff. Just saw all happy people everywhere. Was a wonderful trip to NY.
Nowhere is cheep in New York”
Nice old building a great to have access to the gym. Excellent location at the bottom west corner of central park and very easy to get anywhere in the underground. Room was clean but not much for your money. Plumbers must be expensive in New York; every tap and toilet in the place seemed to leak. Aircon has been installed in rooms which means that a building designed to breath has been closed up and the whole floor smelled musty and old. Still, the price was good and it was quiet and felt safe.
You pay for the location!”
This hostel is friendly and clean but amenities are basic and the main attraction is the location you get for a great price. We found the beds to be uncomfortable and the room (we had a bunk) was very small but the bedding and towels provided were spotlessly clean. The shared bathrooms are adequate but you can't take your clothes/towel into the shower cubicle without them getting wet so you have to leave everything outside. They were small but clean and the showers were good. I didn't have to queue but it's worth getting up early. It was a bit noisy through the night as people came home late but there is a friendly atmosphere. I would stay here again for the price but be prepared for the basic nature of this hostel. I would recommend to people on a budget.
Great location, but lacking some facilities”
The room was small, very basic, and clean. A set of bunks, a writing desk and one chair, tv. Aircon noisy. Couldn't go to the room to relax, just for sleeping. There were no tea and coffee making facilities either in the room or elsewhere. A small shop sold drinks and food, but it was not open long hours. With it being New York you could go out for a coffee 24/7, but not really convenient. Toilets and showers on the floor left a bit to be desired, of three showers one was out of order, another could not be fully turned off. We think there was a dining area for guests who brought their own food in, we used it as a lounge. Staff didn't point out the room to us, it was away from the reception area and we came across it looking for the computers (expensive). Saw others using it, but no sign to say we could, used it anyway. Chosen for the location, which saved us a lot in travel to the city centre as we spent a lot of time there, and at Central Park. Having use of the pool, gym and sauna facilities was great
Amazing location in Central Park...!!! In the other hand is a hostel so you have to share restroom and shower, and probably your bed will be a bunker one. If this doesn't mind to you, you'll enjoy breakfast in Central Park every morning and 10-15 min walking to Times Square. Nearest metro stations are 59 (Columbus Circle) and 66. The hostel also have swimming pool and gym.
My stay was great! I came for the NY Marathon and the location was everything I could ask for. Yes it was a sparse room, but it had a bed - comfortable; TV; enough outlets; and it was secure for a single female traveler. I never felt uncomfortable and the staff was very friendly. I would definitely stay here again!
Great location with all you need to visit New York”
the total lack of responsiveness of reservations desk at ymca is unnerving. if you are a person of abundant faith, trust in the computer reservation process. it really does work ok.
