Wireless / Ploenchit district is the diplomatic hub of Bangkok. It’s at the modern center of the city, with a selection of upscale shopping malls, fine restaurants and five-star hotels along Wireless Road (Thanon Witthayu) and Ploenchit. Given the excellent transportation infrastructure, this is a great base for exploring all of Bangkok.
Wireless Road runs north to south and connects Rama IV and Ploenchit (ultimately Sukhumvit) roads. It hosts several foreign offices, headlined by the US Embassy and adjoining AUA Language School. Services and entertainment here are distinctly international, with favorites like Airplane Italian Restaurant and hotels that regularly host foreign leaders.
To the south is Lumpini Park, Bangkok’s oldest urban green space. It’s a peaceful place to escape the city commotion, and it’s popular with walkers, joggers and tourists in search of a quiet retreat. Visitors can hire paddle boats and go out on the lake or hire a mat for a picnic on the lawn. Activities and outdoor concerts are sometimes staged here and turtles and water dragons are just two of the park's residents.
Anyone with accommodation in the Wireless / Ploenchit district is close enough to Chidlom and Siam Square to enjoy great shopping options. Further to the west is Siam Paragon, one of the leading up-market shopping malls in Bangkok. Getting back and forth from Wireless Road requires little more than a short ride on the Skytrain (BTS).
The Skytrain’s Sukhumvit Line runs east to west through the area, stopping at Ploenchit station. Taxis are useful for connection to Riverside, Khaosan and Chinatown, where sites like the Grand Palace, the Temple of the Dawn and Wat Phra Kaew top the list of sites in Thailand.
