    Perfect location and personal service”

    Location, service, internet, and atmosphere

Yeng Keng (pronounced in Mandarin something like "yeng tching") is, quite simply, a wonderful place to stay when in Georgetown, Penang. It's just a short distance from the atmospheric colonial quarters, where a step around a street corner will bring you to colourful Indian, old Chinese or tasty Malay environments. A medium short walk will bring you to the harbour and the Cornwallis, founded by British naval officer Francis Light of the East India Company. The hotel itself is a tastefully converted old Chinese mansion and the rooms, while not huge, are very comfortable will all the modern trimmings, including free cable Internet. A generous breakfast is served on the porch and an immaculate, swimmable pool offers cool relief in the back yard. The main attraction, though, might be the friendly, informal and very helpful attitude of the staff. Staying in Yeng Keng almost feels like being a house guest. The hotel manager himself even took us on a condo sightseeing in his own car. House rules will appeal to people like us, who prefer a quiet surrounding – there will be no boisterous parties or celebrations on the premises. In fact, our only regret was that, because of a tight schedule, we only could stay for two nights. Returning to Georgetown, we will certainly want to come back to Yeng Keng Hotel.

    OUR FAVOURITE HOTEL”

    Staff, management and ambience

This was our third visit to Yeng Keng. We know all the staff by name and the welcome back is heart-warming. Nothing is too much trouble; just ask. Highly recommended for anyone that wants to stay in the heritage district. For first-timers, Yeng Keng staff will not allow you to be ripped off by taxis, tours, etc. For some, the rooms may be a bit on the small side, but one only sleeps in a room, and the service, cleanliness and ambiance far outweigh room size. We stay in the Garden View Suite and the cost is minimal in comparison to some other places. We would not recommend Yeng Keng for young parents with children - it doesn't have the resort attractions. However, for couples wanting to experience what Georgetown has to offer, have a swim and a few drinks after trekking around, and then have a lovely dinner before retiring, nothing beats Yeng Keng. If you go, you must order Chef Tan's Bombe Alaska for desert. He personally blasts it at the table with his 'flame-thrower' and it's the best we've ever tasted. So much so that last time people on accompanying tables said 'can we have one of those too!' Chef Tan also buys his ingredients fresh from the markets every morning with his wife. The food is superb! As regards the personal, I had an email from the manager (Jacky Chung) before we arrived this time. He asked if there was anything we needed. Well, my wife doesn't always travel well, loves her tea with skim-milk - but the full cream variety doesn't always agree. Jacky said that they had Liptons, normally had full-cream, but they'd get whatever we wanted. We are not those pesky, finicky types, but since Jacky asked I emailed him back that Twinings English Breakfast would be good, plus fresh skim for my wife. When we arrived all I wanted was a beer. One of the staff members came over, gave me a Tiger and said 'Mrs Christine, we have your English Breakfast Tea and cold skim-milk; coming now, lah!' Unfortunately, Agoda only has 1-5. We'd give Yeng Keng a 10!

Superb- we will always go back to Yeng Keng.”

    Cleanliness, heritage and staff

This was our second time at Yeng Keng and we would not consider staying anywhere else in Georgetown - and we have lived in Penang on two separate occasions (totalling 5 years); so we reckon we know Penang pretty well. That's not to knock other hotels, but Yeng Keng is special. We are going back again this year (2013). The cleanliness, attention to detail, the friendliness of the staff and the central location makes the Yeng Keng experience second to none. But the staff are the clincher - it's like revisiting family. Chef Tan makes the best Bombe Alaska going, and his kitchen ingredients are fresh every day from the local markets. Tan and his wife buy them personally in the morning and create beautiful (non-pretentious)food. The reception, bar, room, restaurant and garden staff all reflect the ethos of the hotel. It's not a place for young families, because it does not have the resort-style facilities for young children. For older couples, however, the ambience, peace and heritage are to be savoured and remembered. Go once and you'll go back again.

    Classy hotel, excellent service”

    Good breakfast, great location

Stayed in Yeng Keng for a night and loved it. It was such a classy hotel with such classy decor. The hotel was tastefully decorated, preserving its heritage but at the same time, equipping it with modern amenities that even the most world-weary travelers will appreciate. It has wifi in the rooms, hairdryer and even a LAN cable if you're using those big laptops. Service is also excellent, maybe because it is a small hotel. When I checked in and asked for an ironing board, it appeared in front of my door in less than 10 minutes, which is usually a rare feat. The beds were also very comfortable with the AC functioning well, with guests able to control all parts of the AC. The breakfast was quite delicious too and their nasi lemak is really tasty. I'm local Malaysian, born and bred in Penang, and I wanted to try out Yeng Keng as a birthday treat -- and I thought the packed nasi lemak was really good. They also had a nice selection of local 'kuih' (desserts, common to be eaten at all times of the day including breakfast!) which I think foreign guests will appreciate. However, I don't think that the selection of the breakfast buffet was terribly varied as compared to some 5-star hotels. The continental breakfast isn't much to shout about, but the draw of staying in Yeng Keng is of course the coffeeshops selling street food just outside the hotel. Although the hotel stay turned out to be quite memorable, there were little things that bugged me, and for that I wouldn't give it five stars. My room, the Garden Suite of 205 had the hand held shower which kept on slipping from the bracket, before falling onto the bathroom floor. There was no damage and travellers can easily cope with it, but alas the room fell short of perfect. It's slightly pricey for a town hotel, but I'd recommend it to people who want to stay in the city center in comfort and luxury.

Lovely, perfect hotel that has everything (for us)”

Excellent atmosphere, great service, fabulous location (heart of Georgetown, Penang, which is close to all the great city food and sights)

Another excellently refurbished boutique hotel in the heart of Georgetown, Penang. Location was a huge plus - my significant other and me really don't care about beach hotels around the Feringghi area, since a Penang trip for us is all about the hawker food really. Yeng Keng is literally at the doorstep of many famous hawker fare (it's just a five-minute stroll away from the landmark Penang Road). This was our second visit here coincidentally: yeah, we love it this much that we couldn't pass up on a repeat visit. I have to also stress that it's one of the rare heritage-style hotels that has its own dedicated car parking spots. A number of the other heritage Georgetown hotels do not have this: quite a big deal for a driving visitor like me.

    Charming hotel with attentive staff”

Great location in the UNESCO heritage site, very friendly and attentive staff

The hotel is charming in many ways - its 19th century architecture, friendly and very attentive staff and great location in the heritage site of Georgetown! I must also further commend on the hotel manager's excellent service! We asked the staff for directions to a streetfood market at New Lane on our last evening there and Jacky, the hotel manager gave us a lift in his car instead! I have stayed in many hotels in Malaysia but have never experienced such excellent hospitality! I would certainly return to Yeng Keng Hotel when I visit Penang again and would highly recommend Yeng Keng Hotel.

    Fabulous Yeng Keng Hotel”

The Staff, The Room and The Location!

The staff at the Yeng Keng make you feel very welcome and can give you all sorts of information about the sights to see and how to get there by bus or taxi. The rooms are beautifully appointed / furnished and have life-saving air conditioning and ceiling fans (which you can control!) You can relax in the front courtyard of the hotel with a cold beer and iced gin and tonic pretty much any time of the day but the evening is best. The central location on Chulia Street means that you can explore the heritage town of Georgetown on foot easily, go on a hunt for the famous street art dotted throughout the city and visit other tourist sights like Penang Hill and Kek Lok Si by catching the local bus. There are an abundance of local restaurants, including the Yeng Keng Cafe and the Red Garden (especially the Egg Bryani!) which all serve beautifully fresh and aromatic food.

    Best hotel in Penang”

    location, staff, facilities

This is me and my family's second stay at Yeng Keng Hotel. We returned because we have received very good service from the hotel in terms of staff performance, facilities and very high food standards at Yeng Keng Cafe. Love their breakfast and lunch menu. Staff are very friendly and tries to help in many ways. The best part about this hotel is also its location at Chulia Street where night hawkers are just a stone's throw away if you are feeling very hungry. You can practically walk to the food street without any problems. The rooms are very cosy, heritage feel and we loved it a lot. Still mesmerising even though it is our second stay. We will definitely choose Yeng Keng Hotel again for our next stay if we were to visit Penang again.

    location, staff, facilities

This is me and my family's second stay at Yeng Keng Hotel. We returned because we have received very good service from the hotel in terms of staff performance, facilities and very high food standards at Yeng Keng Cafe. Love their breakfast and lunch menu. Staff are very friendly and tries to help in many ways. Very comfortable stay”

    Comfort, customer service and location

This recently refurbished Hotel is very well appointed, and has a strong focus on customer service. I can't speak highly enough about this hotel - a very pleasant and memorable stay. One feels like you are immersed in a little bit of Georgetown Colonial History at this hotel. The staff are very nice and go the extra mile to help. The food is great - we loved the small, simple but delicious breakfasts. The location too is right in the central hub of Georgetown. We note that some of the front rooms can be a little noisier because you a bit closer to the street. We had a room midway back in the hotel ( which is long and skinny). Noise was definitely not an issue at all where we were. When we return to Penang for another eating adventure - the Yeng Keng will definitely be our preferred hotel.

    Good service, excellent rooms”

    Friendly staff, location, clean room

Stayed here for 3 nights in mid Apr 13. This is one of the many heritage hotels in Georgetown and definitely have a Peranakan feel to it. The staff at the hotel was very helpful. Upon arrival, the counter staff, Yeoh realised that I had booked a Family Suite instead of a double room, which is bigger than what I need. She actually helped to make the call to Agoda to change it to the smaller double room and refund the balance. After that she painstakingly take time to draw on a map the popular eateries in Penang as well as how to get around the place. As for the room itself, size is quite adequate for 2. Plenty of drawers to store your belongings, as well as a safe. One thing we notice was the number of electric sockets in the room. Plenty for us to use. The room is well equipped, TV, fan, air con. The toilet and shower is top-up with toiletries daily too. For the breakfast, seem of the food seem to be bought outside, hence the quantity is limited. So go early for breakfast if you do not want to miss your favourite Penang snacks. The hotel is located in the heart of Georgetown, most of the places are within walking distance. Furthermore, just about 100m to the left of the hotel, is the night market where you can find lots of local food to try. The only drawback is the swimming pool. It is quite small and not often used. We can see debris and leaves in the pool which make us change our mind of having a dip in the pool. Overall, wonderful stay in Yeng Keng Hotel, would stay here again if I visit Penang again.

Fantastic boutique hotel in downtown George Town”

Location (right on Chulia St); lovely rooms; friendly staff

We stayed two nights here and loved the hotel - from the location right on Chulia St, to the lovely restored Chinese shop house, the small but cozy rooms and the friendly staff - everything was perfect. We had asked for a quiet room in the back of the building and had room 110 on the ground floor. The room faces the small swimming pool through its window, but this wasn't a problem - it was quiet both day and night and we got some good sleeptime. The rooms are really small, but very nicely done and have a great shower too. Hotel staff are friendly and helpful, e.g. ordered a taxi for us when we had to leave early in the morning to catch a taxi to the Langkawi ferry, provided a light breakfast etc. The restaurant of the hotel provides a small but interesting menu of local and other Asian / international food at reasonable prices. It must be good as local business people visit the hotel for lunch and dinner business meetings too. One of the best features of the hotel are the many places you can just sit down and relax, reading one of the many magazines / newspapers / books available in the hotel. Our favorite spot was the big sofa on the top floor overlooking the patio and street, with a fresh breeze coming through the windows. We loved our stay at the Yeng Keng Hotel and would definitely go back there.

The best hotel experience at the heart of Penang”

    Location, Personalised Service, Architecture, Facilities

i stayed at yeng keng hotel for 4 days. from the time i stepped into the hotel, my parents and i were greeted by the affable counter staff by name (i was surprised as i have not shown my agoda voucher as yet). staff were every ready to serve and they done their best by recommending places for 'makan' (eating in malay)and visiting. i cannot named any particular staff as all of them provided the personalised service that 5 & 6 stars hotels would talk about (even better than ritz carlton in my view) the room is great, albeit a little dim for my mum, who felt that a stronger light would be helpful to aide her reading in her room (she had mild cataracts). i disagreed with her though as the room's romantic ambience is a plus for me to relax and indulge. the towels and toiletries were changed on a daily basis. each of us had 3 pillows (my bro would love this if he had followed us to the trip). we also explored the gardens and interior architecture of the hotel. my mum and dad were impressed with the environment as there were lots of teak furniture and plants in the hotel. my mum was inspired to transform her house with teak furniture after teh trip breakfast in the hotel is good and simple, as we did not want to have a full stomach when we reach chowrasta market, which is only 5 minutes walk from the hotel. there is also a supper market at night down the street near 7 -eleven, which offered good and cheap food like apom balik (banana pancakes)and local staples. on the last day, we ordered the chicken pie from the hotek chef. although he disagreed with us for take-away, he obliged with our request. the chicken pie was excellent and of course, i would visit the cafe bar when its ready around november. this hotel is rated no.1 in tripadvisor and i would gladly said that deserved this ranking without a doubt. everything is perfect for this botique hotel.

    Beautiful hotel, excellent location ”

Staff are friendly and hotel is lovely renovation of old building

I loved the Yeng Keng on my first visit here and it was even better on second visit. The staff are incredibly helpful and knowledgeable about the area, the building is beautiful and although the rooms are small (we stayed in a Courtyard Twin) there is far too much to see and do in Georgetown to want to spend much time in the room. The small pool in the garden is incredibly refreshing after a hot day of sightseeing (and eating) and breakfast in the new Yeng Keng Café is really interesting with a selection of Peranakan cakes and treats to try on top of the usual B&B breakfast fare. The internet works perfectly throughout the hotel and is free. But the best part about the Yeng Keng is the location so you can walk around the old town and easily reach restaurants and bars in the evening at Jalan Penang.

    Superb heritage hotel”

Great location, clean comfortable rooms, very good service.

yeng keng hotel was an easy walk from the georgetown ferry terminal and the bus interchange. right from check-in to check-out, the staff were very pleasant and helpful. my room was quite large, very clean and comfortable and very tastefully decorated. i loved the beautifully restored double storied old-world feel of the hotel. exploring georgetown on foot and the rest of penang by bus was a breeze. i had dinner in the hotel one evening and the meal was excellent. i highly recommend this hotel.

Cosy little hotel with lots of characters”

Great location, friendly staff, clean and cosy

Smack in the middle of the 'backpacker street', this refurbished 1800s old mansion has the best of location in Georgetown. The room, while it's rather on the small side is very clean and comfortable. If you're just feeling lazy, there are ample cosy corners in the hotel to hide yourself with a good book. There's even a small pool at the side of the hotel...not a big one but good enough to do a few relaxing laps before you embark on your gastronmic adventure around Georgetown :-)! Breakfast is decent, with a good variety of western and local spread. All in all, if you're planning to stay in a conventional 4-5 star hotel....consider splurging that same amount of money at Yeng Keng Hotel...for a totally different experience....

    Lovely hotel in downtown Penang”

    Nicely restored, great location

I am so glad we've chosen Yeng Keng hotel for our stay in Penang. It is right in the middle of Georgetown UNESCO protected area with miriads of little shops. Amongs all the hustle and bustle stands this beautifully restored small boutique hotel. only 16 rooms I think. Finished last year to quite modern standard(porcelain tiles in bathroom) but still retaining traditional charm with exposed beams, etc. There is free internet ( a PC in a hallway) and small pool. Breakfast was good but we had dinners at other places.

    Lovely Hotel in Historic Area”

Stayed 1 night in Yeng Keng as: 1) wanted to stay walking distance to Georgetown attractions, 2) easy car park availability. The hotel ticked these for us and added to that, staff were super nice and rooms clean. As the AC is not connected to the 'key' power, came back to nicely cooled room after walking around the area.. there is also a small dipping pool which we had no time to sample.. As this is a heritage building surrounded by mosques, there might be soundproofing issues for some. We came back around 11 to the sounds of lion dance drumming. This adds to the character of the place but for light sleepers, bring ear plugs or noise cancelling ear buds. Breakfast is included and it's a nice spread (buffet style) which is surprising for a hotel this size. Please take note that Georgetown hotels are required to collect RM2/night which is not included in the price mentioned (collected separately).

Nice hotel, clean and great location”

Nostalgic/Historical features yet modern and nice furnishings
    Too few rooms

it was a nice stay at yeng keng hotel. a one to remember. it is situated strategically in the middle of world heritage city of georgetown and within walking distance to many eating outlets and night hawker stalls. service is personalised, size of hotel/room is rather small but that's what makes it unique as it is restored from a pre-colonial building. yet facilities are modern and f&b is also tasty and reasonably price. definitely, one should stay in yeng keng hotel.
