Henry's stay”
I know Japan and onsen very well. Yumoto Itaya Onsen is perfectly located in the heart of Yumoto, a small, remote town in the Nikko area. It is mid to small sized, charming, historic, and comfortable. It is not brand new, impressive or 4-5 stars. It is a humble, family run lodging that has taken care of itself and cares about its customers. My room had new tatami mats, a sign in Japanese hospitality of good upkeep. everything was clean, the meals were delicious, the staff spoke some English, the baths were wonderful but a little small, and the location is unbeatable if you want to be in Yumoto and Oku-Nikko, the more remote part of Nikko. They demonstrated a very high level of hopsitality and care. Better to go with someone, but perfectly fine if you're on your own. Probably great for groups. A great place to stay. I would return.

A beautiful ryokan for a day trip to Nikko”
I used Yumoto Itaya as a base for exploring Nikko. Great place to spend the evening enjoying a delicious meal and soaking in the onsen before setting out on a full day exploration of Nikko. The last dinner slot is at 7pm, giving you some flexibility in when you arrive and breakfast is served at 7:30 or 8:00 in the morning, leaving enough time for a sunrise hike to Yudaki Falls and Senjogahara wilderness before breakfast and before the crowds of tourists show up. The room was immaculate, the food delicious and the facilities were clean if a little aged. Not all the staff speak english, but everyone is friendly and patient enough to make it work. Would happily stay here again.

Snow-capped mountain view right outside the window”
Yumoto Itaya is very convenient to get to from Nikko JR station - there is a direct bus that stops at a bus stop just 3-5 minutes away. (Do get the bus pass if not the bus rides will be costly). Onsen for ladies is amazingly pretty with a little pavilion and the kaiseki dinner was extraordinary. During our stay, it even snowed - the view from our window reminded us of New Zealand. Did not manage to explore the nearby attractions, but it is only a few bus stops away to Yudaki fall and a 5 min walk to Yumoto Lake itself! Would stay here again for the onsen, the view and the kaiseki dinner!!!!

Cant wait to go back”
Great location away from the busy area of Nikko. So peaceful, right on the lake. The onsen water has sulphur smell, feels so good. We went in December so there was snow, so not much exploring around the lake. Will come back for canoeing, fishing maybe camping. The food at the hotel was so good. Great service, nice bar, very cozy

Very good”
2-3 min walk to Yumoto lake and Yumoto Onsen bus stop. Only complain is couldn't opt for non-smoking room due to promotional price, and toilet was very smelly as previous customers likely smoked inside toilet. Other than that kaiseki dinner and breakfast was very delicious. Hotel showing age but still pleasant.

Amazing experience!”
Biggest ryokan in the area. Great rooms and service with a kind staff that speaks English. Has a comfortable indoor and outdoor bath. The staff also loaned me their snow boots and gloves at no extra charge. Price is also very affordable with what you get in my opinion.

Superior Japanese traditional experience ”
Kind smiling super helpful ready to assist anytime staff, heard all my additional requests and continued serving even after checking out. Contrary to usual many rules in Japan, here, everything was fine, we were the guests. Room was dreamy Japanese with fresh green tea set and service with amazing mountains view. Onsen was great with snow around and tea service. Private rooms restaurant corridor with one awaited for us for dinner and breakfast was a fantastic surprise! The food all was so lovely, watched making tofu, area's Strawberries and so many more excellent dishes. After, complimentary coffee served at fireplace lounge. Not one complain.

Great Japanese style but not that ready for foreigners”
The price itself can somehow tell its quality. The hot spring, food and facilities there are great. Maybe at the top of my list of Japanese style hotel. However, most staff there cannot speak in English. It becomes a problem when I had the dinner. In fact, beverages are not free but their staff didn’t tell. The staff Just simply said ‘what drinks’, but didn’t even show us the menu. That really disappoints me, though it didn’t cost much to pay for orange juice.

Great Service with good foods”
The room is big and clean. Staff is friendly and helpful. The other comment would be your onsen room, is a bit old. Overall is good enough for someone who wanna take a rest with driving trip.

Great service and value for money”
The service was great, the staffs are really polite and helpful. One of the staff can speak English and faciltate the process well. Dinner and breakfast were really good and the onsen in the outdoor is also one of the best. Very quiet place to visit despite it is a bit remote. Highly recommended if you need a getaway from the crowd.

Traditional and authentic must stay”
After seeing other hot spring ryokan in the village, we are glad to choose this traditional Japanese one. The atmosphere is great, servicing staff is courteous, and above all, hot spring is authentically amiable. Good food is never EZ to forget.

Good food, friendly staff but…”
The hotel is a typical ryokan built in the 70s or 80s with little character yet friendly staff, warm rooms and good local food. I was pleased that the staff catered to my dietary requests, - this is not always the case when staying at Japanese ryokans or hotels. Just to the right of the main entrance was a dog tied up on a short chain. It stood on the cold concrete and there was evidence around the dog to suggest it was life-chained. The chain was perhaps a metre and a half and it looked as though the dog couldn’t even get into the dilapidated little dog house next to it. The dog had an infected eye, itchy ears, itchy skin and red paws which it licked at to relieve the pain - typical symptoms of a neglected life-chained dog. The sight of this dog right next to the entrance gave me a sleepless night and I commiserated with the poor dog as it barked aimlessly from 5am onwards. I’d like to suggest to the hotel to take better care of their dog and not let it stand outside alone in the freezing cold. Life chaining dogs is banned in many countries where future guests may come from. Listening to a neglected dog crying outside one’s hotel bedroom is not an experience I can recommend.
