First and Last time”
Having experienced Hutong living before I had a reasonable idea as to what I was going into or thought I had. This place promotes itself on the fact that it has antiques and memorabilia from revolutionary times. It does indeed have these things, however that does not mean that they should not be maintained or cleaned. All the chairs had large worn patches in the upholstery and springs sticking out. As for the room small as all Hutong rooms are, however no cleaning done, thick dust, room only cleaned twice and that was after asking. The bed was a traditional four poster, with the usual veil type pull around in this case using them released a cloud of dust and revealed torn and tattered nets. The curtains had burn holes in them, The chairs in the room had springs sticking out of them at all angles. If you want to experience Hutong living there are many more and better places than this, believe me! aos
Not to be missed if you are into history”
If you are wanting something different, are interested in 20th century Chinese history and are happy without luxury, this little hotel is a MUST. Set in one of Beijing's remaining hutongs this one is full of Cultural Revolution history. The reception area is in one of the four traditional houses set, as always around a courtyard. There you can see all sorts of memorabilia from the famous ‘Long March’. Boards that are quite well written in English tell of the intriguing history of the house. The Chinese government is bulldozing the hutongs and eventually they will all be gone. When that happens, this quirky little piece of history will be turned to dust. Get there before it does. In terms of facilities, they are small and basic but clean and warm enough and the bed is certainly more comfortable than some Chinese hotels provide.
A glimpse of old Beijing”
I chose Red Capital Residence because I wanted to experience something of the real Beijing and it turned out to be perfect. The location is excellent for you to stroll around the old Dongsi Alleys and it's an easy walk to the subway. The place is an amazing time piece, the rooms are not huge but they are clean and full of atmosphere.. It was exactly as I had hoped and anticipated and I loved it.
Really unique and cool spot in a Hutong neighbourhood. Close to some hip bars and interesting areas. Close enough to the major tourist parts of the city.
some structures need updating”
very interesting and funky decorations hard to find in the dark -- no outside lights on sign or street # door lock for my single room very poor -- did not close properly shower door was missing much too expensive for the present building condition
Mao era Nostalgia
Charm, flair and history”
One of the most charming hotels I've stayed in anywhere, packed with memorabilia and hugging a tranquil inner courtyard that's the perfect antidote to the bustle of Beijing. The furniture in some rooms is beautiful, particularly the lacquered box bed. The staff were eager to please. I will definitely be back. For the visitor bored by plastic luxury, this is a wonderful find.
Beautiful decoration (traditional Chinese housing)”
The main entrance is locked and you need to ring the bell to inform the staff which I think it was pretty safe. The staff was very helpful and nice but I communicated in Chinese so I'm not sure about their English. Room was very nice! Very clean bathroom with toiletries and towels. Bed was comfortable. There were mosquitoes so make sure you always close the door and windows.
Worn, torn and dusty”
Nice for a visit, have a drink, take pictures. Skip the accommodation.
Quaint hotel and unique experience”
Check-in was easy and my room was off the lovely central garden. My bedroom was full of interesting pieces, eg an old typewriter and calligraphy pens. I was offered complimentary green tea and red wine on arrival. The hotel staff also showed me round the interesting bar in the old bomb shelter. They also recommended a good restaurant just down the street for dinner. The hotel was very quiet and peaceful. The bed was hard but I was expecting that as it was an old wooden dais. Breakfast was served in the garden and was OK. Overall it was a unique experience to be in a hutong - not the most comfortable but unforgettable. The staff were all helpful and friendly. I would definitely recommend a stay here.
Beijing as it was”
We had a lovely stay. Having lived in Beijing in the 1980'ies, it was wonderful to be back in the Hutongs, which are now under threat from developers. Moreover, for anyone with a bit of interest in the history of 20th century China, it will be a great experience. Sure, there is a bit of dust on Zhou Enlai's personal radio receiver, which is found in the bar, but that is surely to be expected and adds to the charm. The courtyard is a little oasis in Beijing's hectic tempo, and the breakfast served there in the morning is perfect. Simple, and good. All in all, it is a distinguished and peaceful little window to a Beijing of the last century - if that appeals, there is no better place to stay.
The Red Capital Residence is in a hutong. We stayed there for two days for the historic experience. My husband and I stayed at the Mao Room, which has a lot of pictures of Mao, including pictures of his four wives under the glass of the coffee table. The heat took a long time to warm up the first day. I have a feeling they haven't used the room for a while. The bed is comfortable, the blankets thick. My two daughters stayed in the West Concubine Room. Their room was toasty right away. Both rooms didn't have hot water until we asked them to turn it on. The breakfast both days was good. We had yogurt with granola, boiled eggs, croissant, and banana bread. All yummy. I got directions from the staff to the bank (Bank of Beijing) nearby, which has a good exchange rate (for US dollars). Because taxi drivers tended to have a hard time finding the hutong, we used the subway most of the time. We don't know if we'll ever visit Beijing again. It was definitely a once in a lifetime experience and we're glad we stayed there.

I had a fabulous time in this hotel and I can't recommend it enough.
Wonderful experience, excellent personalble servic”
All of the staff was helpful and Helen even arraigned an overnight stay at their Great Wall location, which was a total escape from the city. Breakfast was pleasurable in the open courtyard. Very quiet altho in a hutong neighborhood. A bicycle was made available for the afternoon. Everyone was helpful with queries about the city and places o eat and do. I would definitely return. Historic place and lots of memorabilia.
