We loved the stay at alpine heath. Everyone from the grandparents to the kids had something to keep themselves entertained. The activities planned were good and the hiking trails which had a guide were really excellent. Although alpine heath is a very old chalet resort it gave us a good stay. The only suggestion is for the shower head to be changed, since it was spraying water on all directions.
Good value for money ”
Beautiful scenery, lots to do, good kids club with engaging babysitters (thanks Nicole!). We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Limited wifi and firewood that would not burn were the drawbacks. As a whole good value for money especially for families.
Pros-fantastic horse riding -awesome experience.well worth the price
Cons- should have bigger dining table - only fits 4 people in 6-sleeper chalet
Cons-should have more pool tables and table tennis
Complete & utter disappointment. Definitely not a 4 star resort. Overpriced. We cut our stay short”
We booked our stay based on the fact that it was rated a 4 star self-catering resort with breathtaking mountain views for a tranquil Drakensburg holiday after an expectionally difficult year healthwise.
Unfortunately this is not at all what we got. Although there are mountain views, you only see them after overlooking several chalets and car parks - hardly the feeling of escaping the city!
On arrival we were asked to pay the remainder of our 50% deposit, instead of on departure, which should have been the red flag warning to us.
As for 4 star, this resort is most definitely only 3 star at best! On the first night, my boyfriend was changing light bulbs in the main bedroom - these had clearly not been checked prior to our check-in. On the second night, an actual light fitting fell down in one of the other rooms at about 4am in the morning, smashing to the ground. The fridge did not cool properly. Numerous extra costs. A tractor constantly driving around even at 10pm. No privacy
Three star at best”
Rooms are dated, bathroom mold on the ceiling. They seem to be running out of stock. In one day I heard sorry we are out of milk, out of ham for pizzas, out of chocolate sauce. Beautiful environment but very isolated. Take what you need, even the closest town is not really an option.
Had an awesome time. Absolutely relaxing. Chalets well maintained and facilities are good. Only thing missing was an indoor hot water pool. Would be a good add on for when the weather is cooler.
lovely resort. facilities excellent. just no aircons in room makes a difficult sleep
Enjoyable week ”
Friendliness of staff; location; facilities
The stay was enjoyable. The resort needs to provide aircondiioning or more effective fans. We were there in the middle of a heatwave and the fans were inadequate. The faclities were excellent.
Nothing stands out as best
The lounge does not have a ceiling fan, therefore it was boiling hot in the lounge.
The 3 bedrooms had ceiling fans but it was spinning in the opposite direction, therefore we cannot feel the air blowing, eventually it was corrected the next day.
By the way, the temperature in the area was 37 degrees.
The parking area was a bit far away from the chalet, so it was exhausting to carry all our luggages from the car to the chalet.
On a positive note, all the facilities & amenities were available.
no air conditioning in 4star resort”
activities, scenic views, friendly staff
Could have been better. I believe that in the 21st century , there are "4" star resorts in South Africa with no air conditioning.
Because of the extreme heat , I had 3sleepless nights.
Staff are friendly.
View is beautiful.
Good activities for family.
Very close to all out adventure park.
No time to get bored.
Accommodation needs upgrading/facilities are good”

Satisfactory, expected more...”
Serenity, peacefully quiet, friendly staff
Stay was satisfactory, however not much to do on the hotel itself. No room service, poor heating for winter, security not so great on the hotel estate on a whole. Did not see any security patrolling, stayed at a corner chalet far out so it felt a bit insecure at night. Poor communication with regards to where breakfasts were situated and the spa service was not good at all. Towels used were cold and not big enough to cover body completely. Overall I would not go back in a hurry, as it wasn't my best experience in the Berg. Definitely overrated as a 4.5 star hotel.
activities for children, breakfast, facilities.
Room for improvement”
The facilities, especially for the kids are outstanding. Breakfast was relaxed, with no pressure. We knew our kids were safe, playing around the resort..
It was a very relaxed long weekend. The location is fantastic. Our 4 kids had an awesome time. The bathrooms can do with renovations.. to include mixers at the basins. Our hand shower over the bath tub, didn't work too well either. The bathroom light kept flickering, so my kids were not too happy using the bathroom. Overall we had a good stay and will definitely return.
Great location and very family friendly”
Location, activities and size of chalets
Great, kids were kept entertained. The staff at the kiddies zone are really good and they make the holiday really enjoyable for the kids. This was our second time and we really enjoy it.
The magnificent views, Great Kiddies Entertainment, Superb breakfast
We had a fabulous time in the Berg and my kids thoroughly enjoyed the facilities from swimming pool, putt putt to the excellent childrens program that kept them occupied the whole day. There were 2 great staff that i must compliment "PraiseGod" your security at thegate, he was fantastic from the time we entered the resort to when we left. He was soo warm and welcoming and informative about the resort and what was on offer. He made us feel special and got my kids even more excited about their stay. The other lady was Irene at reception , she was extremely friendly and helpful and made our stay a pleasant one. There are a few things i would liek to suggest, the Chalet we had no 90 was not ideal for children as there was no room in front of the door for the kids to run around. My 2year old had to be watched all the time so that he doesnt topple over the banks. I think it is important when booking families with children that this is considered. The lounge area i think needs refurbishment as the carpets were all damaged, the lampshades were had plugs with insulation tape on them and this isnt safe for children. The DSTV channels did not have a single cartoon channel and considering there are children, there should at least be one. The lunchtime meal special was disappointing, they were sold as takeaways with know disposable cutlery, so we couldnt even eat in the public areas and had to take the meals back to our chalet. Other than pizza we couldnt get any other food like burgers or hotdogs that kids would enjoy.
All in all it was still a relaxing stay and i hope that the report would consider some of these suggections to make it even better.
It was tranquil and restful.”
Setting was very beautiful, little village with pubs and entertainment was great as well as the spa.
I was under the impression that this was a 4 star stay. the lounge furniture was tatty and warn, the light above dining table did not work and electrician could not fix it. took 3 hours for electrician to pitch. Kitchen not adequately equipped for cooking for 6 people. Very small frying pan, glass dishes were small, cutting knives were dismal and everything from meat to veg had to be cut with the breadknife. We were not offered a dvd machine and had to ask if it was available for use. No recommendations were made when we checked in that might have made our stay a bit more comfortable. Bedrooms were adequate and matresses were excellent. Slept well and bathrooms were good. Long walk to hall luggage and groceries from vehicle to the actual shalet. The road from Harrismith to the resort is absolutely awful but I understand that that is not the Hotel's fault but they need to put pressure on local authorities to finishe the road.
Great stay in exquisite mountain setting”
Location, activities, comfortable rooms
Enjoyed every bit of the stay. Centrally located between adventure activities, sight-seeing and places of natural beauty. Great hikes and breath-taking views. Clean, crisp mountain air.
Relaxing but there is still a lot to do and see...”
Amenities and scenery
Really enjoyed our stay. Accommodation was neat and clean, however we did find the service at the restaurant extremely slow! There are a lot of activities to keep busy.
