Mae Fah Luang-Chiang Rai Airport | Flights & Hotels in the Golden Triangle
The official name of the Chiang Rai airport is Mae Fah Luang – Chiang Rai, but it’s largely known as Chiang Rai International Airport. While the airport does service a few international flights, it is mostly used for domestic routes and hosts all major domestic airlines in Thailand. The airport is just a 10-minute drive from Chiang Rai city center, so getting to and from the airport from most hotels is quick and easy. The airport also offers duty-free shops, restaurants and modern facilities for passengers arriving or waiting to depart.
Facilities
While Chiang Rai International Airport is a smaller airport, it is fully equipped with a range of facilities. Passengers will find several souvenir shops with handmade goods, locally produced oolong tea and coffee, wine and even medicinal products. The airport also offers a prayer room, free Wi-Fi, medical services, currency exchange kiosks and ATMs, as well as cafés and coffee shops.

Transportation
Passengers landing at Chiang Rai International Airport have a choice of transportation to take them to town. Metered taxis are perhaps the easiest and fastest way to travel. Guests can book a taxi outside the main terminal. Limousines and cars can be rented at service counters on the first floor. And finally, tuk tuks (three-wheeled motorized vehicles) and songthaews (trucks with seats in the back) can be hired for trips into town. Passengers should negotiate prices with tuk tuk and songthaew drivers before getting aboard.

Things to do near Chiang Rai Airport
Chiang Rai is a nice-sized city that is easy to get around, so getting out and seeing a few sights during a layover or brief stopover is completely doable. Some of the best Chiang Rai attractions are just a short ride from the airport, and taxi drivers know these hotspots, so even tourists who don’t speak Thai can get to and from them with no problems.
- Baan Dam Museum – this landmark attraction is regarded by some as creepy, but the architecture of the “Black House” is meant to provide a wake-up call to those who visit. Not for the squeamish, Baan Dam Museum contains life-size art pieces made of animal bones, horns and skins.
- Blue Temple – known locally as Wat Rong Suea Ten, the Blue Temple is a gorgeous display of Thai and Buddhist architecture. Sunset is a great time to take in this masterpiece, but the architecture is stunning any time of day.
- Clock Tower Chiang Rai – this quirky clock tower is a sight to behold, and tourists who have been to the White Temple will recognize the same patterns. The golden tower was designed by famous Thai artist Chalermchai Kositpipat who dedicated it to His Majesty King Bhumibhol Adulyadej in 2008. The clock tower comes to life every night at 7, 8 and 9 p.m.
- Wat Phra Kaew – once the home of the Emerald Buddha, which is now housed in a temple of the same name in Bangkok, this Buddhist temple is loved for its history and ornate architecture. It also contains a replica of the original Emerald Buddha.
- Wat Klang Wiang – located in the center of Chiang Rai city, Wat Klang Wiang was built in 1432 and features magnificent examples of contemporary Lanna architecture.
