Despite the popular depiction of the far-flung Aussie globetrotter, Bali has toppled Sydney to become the #1 destination for summer holiday travel.
Agoda has compared booking data from 2013 until 2016 to find the top 10 holiday destinations for Australians during December.
The Agoda booking data shows Australians almost exclusively stay within APAC over the Christmas period, suggesting Aussies are ditching the winter ski-cations in the northern hemisphere for the warmer climate closer to home.
Agoda’s recent Travel and Tech Study found ‘food and dining’ and ‘sun, island, beach’ were the two most popular travel experiences for Australian millennials – and Bali offers all of the above. The popular Indonesian island has grown into a lifestyle destination that caters to the millennial foodie lifestyle, with cheap yet stylish ‘instagramable’ cafes, bars and restaurants, set against the backdrop of a tropical island.

“Bali is a staple destination for many Aussies, and it makes sense that it has become a popular summer holiday spot given families can travel overseas together relatively inexpensively. Domestic destinations have held their own against popular overseas destinations. Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and the Gold Coast have held steady positions in the top 10, suggesting Aussies enjoy spending the break near home where they can experience the perfect summer without going overseas.
Other key findings:
- -Singapore is decreasing in popularity as a destination during December, slipping from #5 in 2013 to #7 in 2016, possibly due to Qantas’ decision in 2013 to replace Singapore with Dubai as their European route stop-over
- -Tokyo is an increasingly popular destination, entering top 10 in 2016 and sitting comfortably at #8
