Kenting Itinerary | Can’t-Miss Attractions in Taiwan’s Oldest National Park

Kenting National Park, also known as just Kenting, takes up the entire southern tip of Taiwan. Even though the region is technically a park, a 2- to 3-day Kenting itinerary is not out of the question. Stretching across two peninsulas, Kenting contains several can’t-miss attractions, particularly the Eluanbi Lighthouse near the Southernmost Point in Taiwan. After those two top things to do have been crossed off the list, tourists don’t have to look far in this scenic wonderland to find more!

Day 1 Kenting Itinerary | Birdwatching, nature hikes & seaside scenery

A great place to start any trip to Kenting is on the west side of the park. Two of Kenting’s top attractions – Longluan Lake and Maobitou Park – sit just 5 miles (8 kilometers) apart and contain some serious scenery and more things to do in between.

  • Longluan Lake (Longluan Tan) – Taiwan’s largest freshwater lake is an enjoyable location to hike, picnic and birdwatch. The area provides a vital natural habitat for migratory birds, and visitors can get a close-up look for free at Longluantan Nature Center observatory.
  • Maobitou Park – created for scenic views of the ocean and unique coral rock formations, Maobitou Park is a popular spot for wedding photos and easy hikes. The site also provides an excellent outdoor classroom and an open arena for viewing stars at night. Cat Rock is a great spot to snap a selfie in and Maobitou Park! Guests can even camp in and Maobitou Park at O’GLAMPING campground or other lodges and homestays nearby.

Day 2 Kenting Itinerary | Beach fun & exploring forests

The second day in Kenting National Park can be spent exploring the central region, especially South Bay (Nanwan) and Sheding Natural Park. The two attractions are roughly 5.5 miles (9 kilometers) apart, so travelers can decide for themselves which one has the most appealing attractions and therefore warrants more time on the schedule.

  • South Bay (Nanwan) – with a white sand beach and easy access to every watersport imaginable, South Bay Recreation Area is a standout attraction in Kenting. The current fishing village flaunts a laid-back, friendly vibe and even carries a history of being a former whaling area.
  • Sheding Natural Park – hikers and backpackers can spend hours gazing at the shapes Mother Nature has formed in Sheding Natural Park over the years. The park also serves as a conservation and wildlife research center, so educational opportunities, run-ins with insects and butterfly sightings abound.

Day 3 Kenting Itinerary | The southernmost point & famous lighthouse

Day 3’s activities are the pinnacle of a trip to Kenting, so visitors who can only spend one day in the park might want to plan on seeing these attractions first. This schedule starts at windy Fengchuisha and ends at Taiwan Southernmost Point and Eluanbi Lighthouse.

  • Fengchuisha – known for its windy atmosphere and exquisite ocean views, Fengchuisha is a can’t-miss stop for any trip to Kenting National Park. The Chinese name of Fengchuisha is a combination of three words that describe the area perfectly: feng means wind; chui means blow; and sha means sand. A walk along this windy, sandy coast allows visitors to experience the natural wonder for themselves.
  • Longpan Park – hikers can follow a winding dirt trail through valleys and coral reef terraces on Taiwan’s southeast coast. Open grasslands in Longpan Park make excellent viewing spaces during the day and stargazing mats at night.
  • Taiwan Southernmost Point (Cape Eluanbi) – taking a selfie at the country’s southernmost point is a must-do activity in Kenting, but other landmarks in the area shouldn’t be missed, either. Near Taiwan Southernmost Point is Eluanbi Lighthouse (said to be the brightest lighthouse in Asia) in Eluanbi Park, a maze of walking trails with scenic viewpoints and Longkeng Ecological Reserve. Eluanbi Park also is the site for the annual Spring Scream music festival which takes place each April … and has lasted up to 11 days!
