Travelers looking for a healthy dose of nature and hiking will find plenty of things to do in Kenting National Park. The park is Taiwan’s oldest national park and contains the most southern point in the country, so backpackers can check two bucket-list items off their itineraries with very little planning! Other top areas to see in Kenting (as locals call it) are Maobitou Park, Eluanbi Lighthouse and Nanwan Beach, also known as South Bay Recreation Area.

1. Maobitou Park

It’s a rare treat to see coral reefs outside the water, but at and Maobitou Park, tourists can do just that. They also can lounge on two beaches and capture endless ocean views from an observation deck. and Maobitou Park is a hiker’s haven and photographer’s paradise. Entrance to and Maobitou Park is free, and guests can camp in the area or stay at one of the many villas, homestays and bed and breakfasts inside the park.

2. Eluanbi Lighthouse

Said to be the brightest lighthouse in Asia, Eluanbi Lighthouse is one of Taiwan’s most historical landmarks, and it just so happens to sit next to the southernmost point in Taiwan. The lighthouse stands nearly 69 feet (21 meters) high and can be seen from 27.2 sea miles away. The lighthouse is open for tours during the day. However, tourists who want to truly appreciate its stature and beauty should try to visit at night as well.

Hours: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily from April to October and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily from November to March. (Closed Monday.)

3. South Bay Recreation Area (Nanwan Beach)

Also called South Bay Recreation Area, Nanwan Beach marks the center of Kenting’s two peninsulas, and it is one of the most popular things to do in the region. The white sand beach has been named one of Taiwan’s “Eight Natural Wonders” and is a popular spot for locals and tourists because it contains everything tourists need for a day of fun in the sun. Adventurists can rent jet skis or go boating and sailing from Nanwan Beach, and families love the choice of beach activities and nearby restaurants, as well as the safe swimming area.

4. Longluan Lake

Longluan Lake (Longluan Tan) is as much an educational experience as it is a natural paradise. Guests are invited to stroll through walking paths to view Longluan Lake and the migratory birds that live there or scope out the one-of-a-kind landscape and wildlife at a free indoor observatory at Longluantan Nature Center. The center focuses its studies on bird ecology and offers visitors a chance to observe everything from ducks on Taiwan’s largest freshwater lake to buzzards circling their prey.

5. Kenting National Forest Recreation Area

Visitors can go from bustling Kenting Street to still and silent Kenting National Forest Recreation Area in just 10 minutes. The recreation area was established in 1906 by Japan as a tropical botanical garden, and today the site is enjoyed for its lush forest regions, unique limestone formations and caves. Through the years, the former ocean garden has blossomed into a buxom ecosystem jam-packed with natural attractions like a coral reef forest, white banyan trees and looking-glass trees that help define the term “exotic landscape.” Visitors most likely will run into macaques (Old World monkeys) and possibly even see red-bellied tree squirrels scurrying around in their natural habitat.

6. Longpan Park

For more unique landscape and open hiking, tourists should spend some time at beautiful Longpan Park on the eastern edge of Kenting. This undeveloped region features a simple dirt trail that winds through mountainsides, coral reefs on land, cliff sides, limestone caves and sandy shores. Because the area is open and spacious, Longpan Park is a popular place for locals to watch the sunrise and sunset as well as gaze at the stars.
