As you ascend, you’ll be surrounded by lush greenery and have several opportunities to stop and enjoy the view.
Approximately halfway up, you’ll come across the beautiful Yakuo-in Temple. This ancient Buddhist temple is a perfect spot to experience Japanese spirituality and take a well-deserved rest. Don’t forget to snap some photos with the tengu statues, legendary creatures believed to inhabit the mountains and protect the area.
Afternoon: Summit and Scenic Views
After exploring Yakuo-in, continue your hike to the summit. The peak of Mount Takao sits at 599 meters and provides a stunning panoramic view of Tokyo and, on clear days, even Mount Fuji. For a unique experience, try some local delicacies at the summit food stalls, including mitarashi dango (sweet rice dumplings) and tenugui (a type of Japanese towel often sold as a souvenir).
Evening: Onsen Relaxation
After a day of hiking, treat yourself to a relaxing soak in an onsen (hot spring). Near Takaosanguchi Station, you’ll find Keio Takaosan Onsen Gokurakuyu, a traditional Japanese bathhouse offering various hot spring baths to soothe your muscles. It’s the perfect way to end your first day and recharge for more adventures ahead.
