Chihkan Tower

Built in 1653 as a fortress by Dutch colonists, Chihkan Tower sits in the West Central District and serves as one of the city’s most historic landmarks. The original fort was destroyed in the 1800s by an earthquake and was rebuilt as Chihkan Tower afterwards. Visitors should note the site’s architecture and can learn more about the history of the facility and region in the tower’s library which contains historic documents and dictionaries, many of which are recorded in Siraya, the language spoken by natives during Dutch rule.

Tainan Confucius Temple

Tainan Confucius Temple was built in 1665 and is recognized as the first Confucius temple and the former location of the highest official institute of higher learning in Taiwan. The temple has undergone numerous reconstructions after original structures were destroyed in wars and by natural disasters. The present building is an excellent example of local architecture dotted with exhibits of Confucian texts and calligraphy. The main courtyard is shaded with banyan trees, providing a serene space for visitors and regular Confucian ceremonies.

Anping Old Fort

Known as Fort Zeelandia, Anping Old Fort was built in 1624 by Dutch colonists as the administrative center for Dutch officials. It sits on a scenic peninsula surrounded by waterways in the Anping District. Much of the inner fortress was destroyed in the early 1900s during Japan occupation, but what remains today is an outstanding restoration of the original fortress and one of the top Tainan attractions. Guests can still see more than 70 meters of the original red-brick walls that have preserved and are now showcased as one of the most important pieces of Tainan history.

Taijiang National Park

Throughout the globe, most national parks are located outside central cities, but not Taijiang National Park. This winding waterway can be found in the Anping District, covering more than 39,000 hectares. The region contains five areas of protected lands and streams, each possessing their own unique ecological species, wildlife and flora and fauna. Endangered species like the black-faced spoonbill also can be spotted in the wetlands.

Blueprint Culture & Creative Park

Inspired by a graffiti-covered street that has since been condemned and destroyed, Blueprint Culture & Creative Park serves as a hub for artists and business owners aiming to showcase beauty through bold and modern art. The buildings in the area were once used as dormitories for Japanese officials, but in 2015, locals transformed the structures into mighty murals and 3D images. Each storefront is decorated with unique and picturesque murals, and even if visitors don’t like to shop, they can have fun taking selfies and admiring the cunning intricacies of each façade.
