Located in Central Forest Park about 30 miles (51 kilometers) east of the city, Hiroshima Airport handles a host of domestic and international flights. Passengers flying from Beijing, Dalian, Guam, Seoul, Shanghai and Taipei can land in Hiroshima. Passengers in Hiroshima can book domestic flights to destinations like Haneda and Narita airports in Tokyo and New Chitose Airport near Sapporo in northern Japan. The one-terminal facility makes getting around easy, and Hiroshima Airport is flush with shops, airport services, restaurants and lounge areas, making it an interesting place to explore before a flight or during a long layover.

With only one terminal, passengers should have no trouble locating the domestic and international terminals, as well as the arrivals and departures sections, of the airport. For departures, gates are lettered A through D for domestic flights and E through G for international flights.

Transportation Options

Hiroshima Airport is located in the city of Mihara and serves as the gateway to Hiroshima and surrounding cities. Travelers wanting to go directly to Hiroshima from the airport can grab a bus outside of the arrivals hall. Buses run regularly, and the trip takes about 45 minutes. Alternately, buses also run to Shiraichi Station, where trains bound for Hiroshima Station leave every few minutes. The train trip from Shiraichi Station to Hiroshima Station takes about 45 minutes. Taxis, which are the most expensive yet most private option, also are available outside the arrivals hall. Visitors wanting to explore areas outside Hiroshima will find buses that travel regularly to Mihara Station (30 minutes), Kure Station (50 minutes), Nakasuji Station (40 minutes) and Fukuyama Station (50 minutes).

Top Things to do in Hiroshima

Since Hiroshima Airport is relatively small and easy to exit, even for most international visitors, seeing a few regional attractions isn’t hard to do during a layover. Passengers with a few hours to spare can zip to the city in 45 minutes and at least snap some of photos of popular things to do. Being so close to a city with a history as rich as Hiroshima’s, who could resist this opportunity?

Peace Memorial Park – Hiroshima

Known also as the Atomic Bomb Dome, after the one structure that survived the devastating bombing on August 6, 1945, this park pays homage to lives lost and lessons learned in one of the most historical acts of war that occurred during the 20th century. The Atomic Bomb Dome, an exhibit left in the condition as the nuclear blast left it, sits across the waterway around the park and is accessible by crossing Motoyasu Bridge. The structure is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Hiroshima Castle

Lovers of Japanese castles won’t want to miss a tour of Hiroshima Castle, unique to the castle world due to its position on flat land. While most Japanese castles are built on hills, where unwanted visitors could be spotted more easily, Hiroshima Castle was built inside a moat on a plain.
