Macau International Airport accommodates more than 6 million passengers per year and can handle up to 2,000 passengers every hour. The terminal is two levels, with arrivals on the ground floor and departures on the first floor. Macau is a common stopping spot for incoming and outgoing flights for mainland China and surrounding countries in Southeast Asia, so the airport maintains a selection of duty-free shops and international cafes in a super modern facility.

Transportation
Macau is a modern city, so getting to and from Macau International Airport can be accomplished in several ways. Macau’s light rail system (LRT) makes traveling to popular tourist attractions easy and budget-friendly. Sightseers who want to get a good look at Macau will want to take advantage of other modes of transportation as well.
- Macau LRT – guests can hop on the train at LRT Airport Station on Avenida Wai Long just outside the passenger terminal of the airport. The train makes several stops in Taipa, including one in Cotai, and goes to Macau Peninsula, where passengers can get off at stops in Macau Peninsula.
- Shuttle buses – free shuttle buses to hotels and casinos near The Cotai Strip are available outside the main terminal from early morning hours until 9 p.m.
- Taxi – taxis are a safe bet for a relatively quick trip into the center of town. Passengers who prefer privacy over public transportation can expect a 30-minute trip and a $50 meter charge.
- Car rentals – Avis and Happy Mokes have permanent stations in the arrivals area of the airport, and travelers with proper driving credentials and a credit card can rent a car to get around Macau independently.
- Ferry – the ferry is a fun way to jump from Macau’s many island districts. Ferries also run to mainland China and Hong Kong.
- Bus – public buses are a cheap way to travel around Macau but do require some know-how. First-time users will need a couple tips: always have correct change, and consider getting lost an adventure!

Things to do on a layover in Macau
Macau is so compact that travelers who have a few hours to spare can see and do a lot outside the airport! The Cotai Strip is just a five-minute drive, and it takes less than 30 minutes to reach the historic Se district, which sets across Outer Harbour. With ferries, trains and shuttle buses at passengers’ fingertips, there’s no reasons why travelers shouldn’t venture out to see more of Macau.
