What to Do in Kota Kinabalu | Trekking, River Cruises & Cultural Activities

It’s almost as fun to say “what to do in Kota Kinabalu” as it is to discover all the things to do in Sabah State‘s capital. Located on the island of Borneo in Malaysia, Kota Kinabalu is a magical seaside paradise surrounded by blue ocean on one side and the luscious Mount Kinabalu region on the other. Kota Kinabalu also is home to a number of historical landmarks and mosques, cultural activities and the Klias River, where cruises take tourists through winding channels and unbelievably beautiful rainforests.

Serving as an awesome backdrop to the city, Mount Kinabalu is a hiker’s heaven and a nature lover’s paradise. Two trails take trekkers to the summit of the mountain, which stands at 13,435 feet (4,095 meters). Most visitors choose Ranau Trail, which is a two-day hike that takes hikers six kilometers up the mountain the first day. Guests stay in mountainside huts and complete the hike the following morning. This hike is perfect for beginner hikers who are fairly fit, as the pathway is lined with man-made steps and staircases with handrails. Advanced hikers may want to seek permission to hike the mountain’s other trail, Kota Belud.
