Khao Yai National Park is a fun place to holiday with the family or seek refuge from Bangkok for a few days. A solid Khao Yai itinerary includes mountain hikes, waterfalls and a few activities in Pak Chong, which also is a great place to stay in Khao Yai. From winery tours, petting farms and magical scenery, Khao Yai National Park has all the elements for an adventurous vacay in Thailand!

Day 1 Khao Yai Itinerary | Explore Khao Yai National Park
When holidaying near Khao Yai National Park, the first thing on the itinerary should be to explore the park itself. Khao Yai National Park became Thailand’s first national park in 1962. Its rich forests, wildlife, waterfalls and natural elegance landed it a listing as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many tourists opt to book a hotel in nearby Pak Chong, but visitors are welcome to pitch a tent or book a cabin inside the park. Lam Ta Khong Campground and Pha Kluai Mai Camping Ground are equally good spots for tourists to enjoy cool mountain air, spot elephants and other exotic wildlife and enjoy scenic views of the Lam Takhong reservoir.
Things to do in Khao Yai National Park
The tallest waterfall in Khao Yai, this three-tiered dazzler is a popular spot for watching elephants, and the well-maintained walking trails make it a treat to explore for solo backpackers and families alike.
This ever-flowing stunner was featured in the film “The Beach,” and after seeing its lovely foliage, tourists will understand why it also is known as the “Orchid Waterfall.” Hiking trails around this waterfall wind through lush forests and lead to smaller waterfalls.
Trekking
Hiking trails in Khao Yai National Park cover more than 30 miles (50 kilometers) of terrain in the park. Two popular short hikes (one to two hours) wind through Nong Pak Chi and lead to the Nong Phak Chi Wildlife Watching Tower, a popular place to watch for elephants. Advanced hikes also are open in the park, and guided hikes to Haew Su Wat Waterfall can be arranged with park officials.
Night Safari
Visitors who choose to stay inside the park for the night can catch a free lift with park rangers for a night safari. The rangers offer rides at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. and can be arranged from Lam Ta Khong Campground or Pha Kluai Mai Camping Ground.
