Day 1 Khao Yai Itinerary | Explore Khao Yai National Park

When holidaying near Khao Yai National Park, the first thing on the itinerary should be to explore the park itself. Khao Yai National Park became Thailand’s first national park in 1962. Its rich forests, wildlife, waterfalls and natural elegance landed it a listing as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many tourists opt to book a hotel in nearby Pak Chong, but visitors are welcome to pitch a tent or book a cabin inside the park. Lam Ta Khong Campground and Pha Kluai Mai Camping Ground are equally good spots for tourists to enjoy cool mountain air, spot elephants and other exotic wildlife and enjoy scenic views of the Lam Takhong reservoir.

Things to do in Khao Yai National Park

  • Haew Narok Waterfall – the tallest waterfall in Khao Yai, this three-tiered dazzler is a popular spot for watching elephants, and the well-maintained walking trails make it a treat to explore for solo backpackers and families alike.
  • Haew Su Wat Waterfall – this ever-flowing stunner was featured in the film “The Beach,” and after seeing its lovely foliage, tourists will understand why it also is known as the “Orchid Waterfall.” Hiking trails around this waterfall wind through lush forests and lead to smaller waterfalls.
  • Trekking – hiking trails in Khao Yai National Park cover more than 30 miles (50 kilometers) of terrain in the park. Two popular short hikes (one to two hours) wind through Nong Pak Chi and lead to the Nong Phak Chi Wildlife Watching Tower, a popular place to watch for elephants. Advanced hikes also are open in the park, and guided hikes to Haew Su Wat Waterfall can be arranged with park officials.
  • Night Safari – visitors who choose to stay inside the park for the night can catch a free lift with park rangers for a night safari. The rangers offer rides at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. and can be arranged from Lam Ta Khong Campground or Pha Kluai Mai Camping Ground.

Day 2 | Wine Tasting & Farm Life

Just outside the north entrance to Khao Yai National Park sits a charming and somewhat secret wine region and farming community. Many popular outdoor attractions are near the community of Pak Chong, so visitors often choose to book a hotel in town rather than renting a campsite inside the park. The region makes an excellent destination for a romantic getaway or a fun-filled family vacation.

  • PB Valley Khao Yai Winery – guests are invited to join a wine tasting, tour the grounds and savor a scrumptious (and affordable) gourmet lunch at this vineyard just outside Khao Yai National Park. Wine tours are 350 THB (11.20 USD), and the winery is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. (The last tour starts at 4:30 p.m.)
  • Farm Chokchai – the largest dairy farm in Thailand also serves as a hands-on museum and petting zoo. Guests can experience farm life by milking cows and interacting with farm animals. Kids and adults love the cowboy and sheepdog shows … and eating burgers and ice cream made right on the farm! Farm Chokchai is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Tour prices are 300 baht for adults and 150 baht for children. (Tours are in Thai language only.)
  • Pak Chong Night Market – set up in the center of town, Pak Chong Night Market is a can’t-miss experience for tourists wanting cheap and authentic Thai street food. The market is open from 5 to 10 p.m. daily.
