Hours: The working cathedral is open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. As with any place of worship, visitors should dress appropriately, ask before taking photos and always respect those who are at the church to pray, confess or worship. 2. War Remnants Museum

Not for the faint of heart, the War Remnants Museum takes visitors on a walk through the Vietnam and Indochina wars in the shoes of Vietnamese soldiers. Indoor exhibits include graphic photographs, equipment, war remnants and harrowing accounts of the war told by veterans. Outdoors, visitors can view a full-size helicopter, attack bombers and even defused bombs that were recovered when the conflict ended. One of the more eye-opening exhibits is the “tiger cages” display, where guests can walk into replicas of underground cells that once housed political prisoners of war. The photographic memorial donated by Vietnam War Correspondent Bunyo Ishikawa also is a can’t-miss exhibit. Although gruesome, the photographs captured the devastating effects that chemical agents, like napalm and Agent Orange, had on civilians caught in the line of fire during wartime.

3. Independence Palace (Reunification Palace)

Standing proudly at the entrance to Tao Dan Park in the center of downtown Ho Chi Minh City, Independence Palace is a phenomenal place to discover some fascinating history of Vietnam. Also known as Reunification Palace, the site marks the end of the Vietnam War and fall of Saigon. Visitors can view the tracks of the tanks that crashed through the gate in 1975 and captured the palace, which then served as the French governor’s home and office. 4. Ho Chi Minh City Opera House

The French colonial building was completed in 1897 and now hosts the city’s most prestigious ballets, symphonies and operas. 5. Saigon Central Post Office

While you’re visiting the Notre Dame Cathedral of Saigon, just glance across the street to find Saigon Central Post Office. This dominating structure was finished in 1891 under French Indochina rule and is one of the most notable examples of French colonial architecture in all of Vietnam (and maybe even Southeast Asia). Visitors are welcome to photograph the stunning outside architecture and even have a peek on the inside, as the Saigon Central Post Office still handles the city’s post today! One fun activity, besides photographing the large maps painted on the ceiling, the marble floors and the antique phone boxes on display, is to mail a letter or postcard from this historic site.
