Where to Go for This Year’s Golden Week Holiday

In search of the next ‘it’ destination? Look no further as leading travel platform Agoda.com reveals seven under-the-radar places worth your attention

National Holiday, often referred to as Golden Week, is probably one of the best opportunities in the year for people to travel abroad and gain respite from their hectic daily lives. As these popular and touristy destinations become increasingly crowded, the Chinese have begun showing interest in off-the-beaten-track cities and regions previously considered too niche. Here, Agoda.com uncovers more destinations to explore during this year’s Golden Week holiday from 1-7 October 2019.

1. European Escapes

Chinese travellers who frequent cities such as Paris and Milan are well acquainted with Europe’s old-world charm, but the continent offers far more than Instagram-worthy sights and remarkable cuisine. Those who venture to Europe’s exotic locales are bound to discover equally dazzling facets of culture.

Lesser known among Europe’s countries, but just as compelling, Serbia is gaining ground as a hub for art, design and nightlife. In fact, its capital Belgrade has earned comparisons to buzzy Berlin in recent years. This, coupled with its wealth of fairy tale-like attractions, means that Serbia is bound to please a variety of travellers.

Meanwhile on the Balkan peninsula, Bosnia and Herzegovina boasts its share of boutique hotels and hip eateries juxtaposed against unique ancient architecture — a product of its history under the Ottoman Empire and Austro-Hungarian rule.

Both countries feel like a world away from the usual European haunts, and best of all, are visa-free for travellers with Chinese passports.

You can also head to the Faroe Islands, a part of the Kingdom of Denmark. Situated between Iceland and Norway, these islands are often called “paradise fairyland”. The archipelago’s weather is enticing — a crisp 9 degrees Celsius in October – and you might even be able to glimpse the Northern Lights from here on a good night. The visa application for this Danish trip will be well worth the effort.

Stay:

  • In Belgrade, check out Selection Rooms for a refined place to rest, or NapPARK Hostel for a trendy stay on a budget.
  • ApartArt in Sarajevo puts you in a central spot to discover Bosnia and Herzegovina.
  • On Faroe Islands, book Hotel Vagar, which is located in the picturesque fishing village of Sørvágur. Conveniently, it’s also a two-minute walk from the airport.

  • Turkish Delights

When you think of easily accessible destinations, do only Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore come to mind? Think again.

Accessible yet marvellous, Turkey’s Istanbul can provide new opportunities for tourists to experience, and even taste, the continent’s impressive diversity.

An intersection of East and West, Istanbul contains a plethora of sights and sounds as intoxicating as its culture. As the capital of the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires for over 1,500 years, Istanbul’s deep history manifests in its stunning surroundings. Byzantine- and Ottoman-era buildings such as the Hagia Sophia and the Topkapi Palace are an endlessly fascinating draw for many.

Stay:

  • Tropical Getaways

The Philippines is hardly under-the-radar for water enthusiasts. But, with 7,107 islands, there remains much to see in this plentiful country.

A long-time favourite for many travellers, Palawan’s natural beauty is an ideal destination for a tropical retreat. Those in pursuit of a peaceful escape will revel in Palawan’s breath-taking vistas, clear waters and glorious stretches of white sand, while families can create beautiful memories with the island’s multitude of kid-friendly activities.

For a taste of the Philippines’ rich culture and history, opt for Bataan, where historical Spanish-era landmarks are as picturesque as the coastal province’s collection of beach-towns. Time stands still at the endearing estate of Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar, and culture buffs will find its architecture and quaint surroundings truly charming.

Stay:

  • In Manila, where travels to both Palawan and Bataan begin, check out The Peninsula Manila for a luxurious stay, or I’M Hotel for proximity to the Filipino nightlife.
  • El Nido Resorts is a stunning choice for those traveling to Palawan in groups, or with families and small children. A chic option for millennial tourists is Hotel Covo located within the Lio Tourism Estate and designed as an ecologically sustainable destination with an arts- and culture-led community.
  • Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar provides the perfect jumping-off point to explore Bataan.
