4-Day Kyushu Itinerary | Off-The-Beaten-Path Spots for Repeat Visitors

If you’ve already experienced the iconic highlights of Japan—Tokyo’s neon buzz, Kyoto’s temples, or even a quick tour through Fukuoka—then it’s time to dive deeper. This 4-Day Kyushu Itinerary is designed specifically for repeat visitors who are ready to uncover the island’s lesser-known treasures. Kyushu, Japan’s third-largest island, is a land of natural beauty, rich culture, and warm hospitality, and this itinerary focuses on off-the-beaten-path spots that often go overlooked by first-time travelers.
Whether you’re craving hot springs, hidden shrines, quiet countryside, or local street eats without the crowds, this guide has you covered. We’ll start on Day 1 in Oita Prefecture, known for its scenic mountains and soothing onsen towns like Yufuin. From there, Day 2 takes you to the rural charms of Fukuoka Prefecture, where coastal views and quaint villages reveal a quieter side of Japan. On Day 3, we’ll explore Saga Prefecture, famous for its ceramics, hot air balloon festivals, and peaceful landscapes that make you feel worlds away from the city rush.
Finally, we’ll wrap up with Day 4 in Fukuoka City, blending local food adventures, cultural sights, and just enough urban energy to end your trip on a high note. This itinerary is ideal for slow travelers, cultural enthusiasts, and anyone looking to connect more deeply with the real Japan—beyond the guidebook highlights. Get ready to journey into a side of Kyushu that many tourists miss but few forget.
4-Day Kyushu Itinerary | Day 1 – Oita Prefecture
Spend the first day in Kyushu in Oita Prefecture for a day of adventuring and activities that highlight the island’s natural beauty. Start in Nakatsu City and conquer the Maple Yaba Cycling Road, and then travel an hour south to Bungoono to marvel at Inazumi Underwater Cave. Between the two, swing by Kokonoe Yume Otsurihasi Bridge, to capture incredible views during a daring adventure.
Maple Yaba Cycling Road: Starting in front of Nakatsu Station, the Maple Yaba Cycling Road is a 35-kilometer biking trail that winds along the beautiful Yamakuni River. Tourists can rent bicycles for a few hundred yen and enjoy a scenic ride along railroad tracks, through tunnels and across bridges in Yabakei Gorge. The route includes calming views of rural rice fields, waterfalls and freshwater streams.
Kokonoe Yume Otsurihashi Bridge: One of the most incredible photography spots in Kyushu, particularly in the fall, is at Kokonoe Yume Otsurihashi Bridge, a suspension bridge in Oita Prefecture. The bridge is almost 400 meters long and is suspended 750 meters above the ground. From the bridge, tourists are treated to the jaw-dropping views of rolling hills and lush foliage.
Inazumi Underwater Cave: Formed thousands and thousands of years ago near Bungoono, the Inazumi Underwater Cave is a Kyushu sightseeing spot that deserves to be on every traveler’s bucket list. This limestone cave features long underground paths filled with stalactites, pools of crystal clear waters, and walls with gorgeous blue coloring. In addition to cave adventuring, visitors can enjoy various shops, museums, statues, and restaurants in the area.
Bungoono is a peaceful paradise and a wonderful place to stop for the night. Choose a campground on the banks of Okudake River and relax by a warm fire , or travel downstream after the sun goes down to admire a natural light show along the Nakatsumure River, one of the best places for firefly viewing in all of Japan.

4-Day Kyushu Itinerary | Day 2 – Fukuoka Prefecture
Start early on day two for a three-hour drive north to the coastal city of Itoshima, known for its surf-friendly beaches and mountain hiking trails. Visitors to the region in western Fukuoka Prefecture are guaranteed incredible photographs as well as lifelong memories. Itoshima is located in the northwestern section of Fukuoka Prefecture and features the Sakurai Futamigaura of Meotoiwa, or Married Couple Rocks. Visitors are invited to photograph the archaeological formation while exploring the area, which is a popular fishing spot for families and nature lovers.
Itoshima also features Anego-no-hama Beach, known for its “singing” sands because of the squeaky sound the quartz in the sand makes when people walk on it. According to Japanese legend, only clean beaches sing, and Anego-no-hama Beach is one of just 20 singing sand beaches remaining in Japan today.
2 Can’t-Miss Photo Spots in Itoshima
- Palm Tree Swing: Located next to the lovely Fukuokashi Umizuri Park, the Palm Tree Swing is a picture-perfect swing that hangs from two palm trees. Tourists can climb onto the seat for a quick swing and take in the view of Hakata Bay. A photograph of the Palm Tree Swing with the white sand and blue water in the background makes an incredible souvenir from Itoshima.
- Angel’s Wings: Another popular photography spot in Itoshima is the Angel’s Wings, a set of angelic wings painted on a wall near PALM BEACH THE GARDENS. Tourists can take fun photos while standing between the wings and then venture into the shopping complex to browse Japanese shops, restaurants and bakeries.

4-Day Kyushu Itinerary | Day 3 – Saga Prefecture
On day three, travelers will head one hour south of Itoshima to Saga Prefecture for an authentic Japanese lunch along Mitsuse Soba Road (Highway 263) in Saga City and a succulent seafood dinner in Tara Town. The day will finish with a relaxing soak in a Japanese hot spring.
Soba Noodles
Tara Oysters
Takezaki Crab
Must-Try Japanese Food & Hot Springs in Saga & Tara
Mitsuse Soba Road: Soba noodles are a staple in Japan, and Mitsuse Soba Road in Saga City is lined with a variety of soba noodle restaurants. These delicious buckwheat noodles are handmade and combined with vegetables, meats, and broths for a flavorful finish. Visitors can stroll down Mitsuse Soba Road easily in just 10 minutes, but it’s better to take some time browsing through the quaint shops and attractions of Saga City.
Tara Oysters and Crabs: Any good tour of Saga Prefecture must include a tasting of the region’s most famous seafood dishes. Tara, about an hour and a half southwest of Saga City, features oyster shacks that allow customers to cook their own seafood delicacies right at the table. These casual restaurants are located near the sea and provide the freshest seafood and the best views.
Takezaki crab is another Tara city specialty. These crabs come straight from the Ariake Sea and are cooked into a wide selection of flavorful dishes.
Saga Onsen: Relax and reflect on a day’s worth of special meals at an onsen, or Japanese hot spring, in Saga. Many of these special spas offer sleeping facilities, so travelers can get a good night’s rest before setting off on their next adventure in Kyushu.

4-Day Kyushu Itinerary | Day 4 – Fukuoka City
No itinerary in Kyushu is complete without a fabulous day of shopping and sightseeing in Fukuoka, the island’s most populous city. Fukuoka is by far the best place to enjoy a little retail therapy and pick up souvenirs for friends and family. It’s also perfect for discovering the natural beauty and history of the region. Spend the final day of your 4-day itinerary in Kyushu either exploring Fukuoka City shopping districts or checking out a couple of the city’s fun landmarks. With a well-planned itinerary, travelers can easily do both!
Best Places to Shop in Fukuoka
Mark Is at Momochi: Opened in 2018, Mark Is at Momochi is a shopping complex with three floors of shops and restaurants. Shoppers can find everything from clothing and cosmetics to books, toys, and home goods. The mall hosts a variety of fun events like fashion shows and sewing workshops throughout the year and also features a bakery, supermarket, cinema, and children’s area.
Canal City Hakata: With over 200 shops, restaurants, and cafes to explore, Canal City Hakata definitely deserves its nickname of ” A City within a City.” It’s the added attractions, like movie theaters, game centers, and cinemas, that make this mall a truly special place to shop. Canal City Hakata’s show-stopping attraction is a relaxing waterway, complete with fountains, lights and music, that winds through the first floor.
Marinoa City: Filled with outlet stores and tax-free shops, Marinoa City is a great place to find deals on clothing, handbags and accessories, home goods, and much more. This beautiful waterfront mall has a casual atmosphere that’s perfect for a day of relaxed shopping. After shopping for Kyushu souvenirs, enjoy a ride on the nearby Marinoa City Skywheel to see Fukuoka from above.
Tenjin Underground Mall: Shopping underground may seem strange, but Tenjin Underground Mall is set up with lights and decor that make the area feel like an above-ground shopping street. This mall is easily accessible by public transit as it sits directly below Tenjin Station. Some of the amenities available include small boutique shops, department stores, restaurants, and cafes.
Fukuoka Sightseeing Spots for Non-Shoppers
For visitors who would rather explore popular Fukuoka City attractions rather than fill their shopping bags with souvenirs, both Kyushu National Museum and Uminonakamichi Seaside Park are great places to spend a few hours. Tour the museum in the morning and soak up some sunshine at the amusement park in the afternoon.
Uminonakamichi Seaside Park: Travelers of all ages will love to walk through Uminonakamichi Seaside Park, a giant park in Fukuoka. Beautiful walking paths wind through the picture-perfect flower gardens and bodies of water. There is also a small petting zoo for children to enjoy. From the spring to the fall, various events are held in the park that bring locals and tourists together to celebrate nature.
Kyushu National Museum: Gain a deep understanding of Japanese history at Kyushu National Museum, a large history museum in Fukuoka Prefecture. The museum includes a main area with different exhibits, a hall for plays and performances, and a gift shop. The exterior of the museum also is visually stunning with its blue pillars and glass walls.
