The eastern seaside city of Kuantan makes a great daytrip from Kuala Lumpur, but there are enough things to do in Kuantan for a full-fledged vacation! Travelers looking for more secluded travel spots with beaches and outdoor activities can plan a full itinerary in this wondrous city. Just a few can’t-miss outdoor tours include hiking around Sungai Pandan Waterfall and taking a Kuantan River Cruise, and these attractions will lead to even more fantastic Kuantan activities.

1. Mini Zoo Park Teruntum
One of Kuantan’s many fun and kid-friendly attractions, Mini Zoo Park Teruntum is a small botanical garden that houses several exotic animals, like orangutans, crocodiles and ostriches. The zoo sits inside Teruntum Park (Taman Teruntum), where kids will find a fun playground and visitors can follow walking trails and footpaths to adjacent Pantai Teluk Cempedak, a beach perfect for picnics, strolling and swimming.
Hours: 9am-6pm daily

2. Pantai Teluk Cempedak
It’s easy to get comfy and laze an entire day away at Pantai Teluk Cempedak. Also known as Palm Beach, the white sands stretch one kilometer along the South China Sea, and the rocky cliffs make good climbing spots and scenic backdrops. Families can easily hang out at Pantai Teluk Cempedak on the fly, as there are several restaurants – and even a McDonald’s – on the north end of the beach. Because of its laid-back atmosphere and seaside views, some travelers choose to stay near Pantai Teluk Cempedak. The 5-star Hyatt Regency Kuantan Resort and 2-star De Chempedak Guest House are two beachfront hotels worth checking out!

3. Masjid Sultan Ahmad Shah (Sultan Ahmad 1 Mosque, Kuantan)
Sitting on the banks of the Kuantan River, this beloved mosque stands as an ornate centerpiece to Kuantan’s government district. Masjid Sultan Ahmad Shah was completed in 1993, and the spacious interior can accommodate 8,000 worshipers at a time. While the mosque’s size is impressive, it’s the architecture that tourists come to photograph. The stunning white beauty is accented with a blue roof, five domes and four rocket-like minarets.
Hours: 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.

For a taste of paradise and an all-day extravaganza, families should add a trip to Sungai Pandan Waterfall to their Kuantan itineraries. Camping spots and barbecue grills allow guests to spend the night and enjoy the peace and quiet a little longer. Sungai Pandan Waterfall is about 15 miles (25 kilometers) west of Kuantan city center.

5. Kuantan River Cruise
The Taman Esplanade Kuantan lets visitors walk along the banks of Kuantan River, but a Kuantan River Cruise puts tourists on the water itself. Cruises take about an hour and a half and pass by mangrove swamps and other scenic landscapes, as well as the local fishing village of Tanjung Lumpur. Passengers on evening cruises are likely to see dazzling fireflies dancing around the river.
Hours: 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Tickets: 200 to 600 MYR (50 to 145 USD), depending on route and duration of cruise
