Things to do in Yilan
Yilan County is rich in natural beauty, and its attractions truly showcase this exceptional area. Here are just some of the top picks for things to do in and around Yilan that visitors will want to consider for their trips:
Jiaoxi Hot Springs Park
No trip to Yilan is complete without a trip to a hot spring or two, including Jiaoxi Hot Springs Park. This hot spring park is a serene retreat located near the center of Jiaoxi, with wooden pathways, a Japanese-style decor, and complete with foot soaking spots. Guests will take their socks off, sit down low, dip their feet in the warm waters of this spring, and relax.
Tangweigou Hot Springs Park
Tangweigou Hot Springs Park has been a popular hot spring spot since the Japanese colonial period (late 1800s), and remains so today. Most of the pools at this hot spring park are free to use, and guests can dip their feet in and enjoy the beautiful ambiance. For a unique experience, guests can also choose to pay a small fee (around $1.00) to dip their feet in a pool that’s filled with fish. Once their feet are in the pool, the fish will nibble away at their feet, pulling away dead skin and debris. Some consider this to be quite the pedicure, so adventurous travelers will have to give this “fish soak” a try.
Wufengqi Waterfall
Retreat to nature with a visit to Wufengqi Waterfall. This beautiful waterfall resides at the end of a shaded trail on a well-maintained footpath, making it the perfect destination when the weather gets hot. The trail to this waterfall isn’t too difficult, and the excursion can be completed within one to two hours. The falls have three levels and are about 328 feet from the top to the bottom. At the falls, there is also a play area for kids, along with a barbecue area, which makes this excursion even more enjoyable.
Houdongkeng Waterfall
Houdongkeng Waterfall is another waterfall that’s located just to the north of Jiaoxi. While this excursion isn’t quite as well maintained as Wufengqi Waterfall, it is about the same when it comes to difficulty. It is recommended hikers wear sturdy shoes, but otherwise, it’s not much of a challenge and the excursion should be completed in about one to two hours. Lush greenery surrounds this waterfall, which cascades into small pools. The few shallow pools at the end of the falls are the perfect place to dip feet in and would be a good retreat in warmer months.
Paoma Historical Trail
Paoma Historical Trail is a gentle, leisurely trail that travels over about 3.75 miles and takes about two hours or so to complete. This beautiful trail is nicely shaded and provides gorgeous views of Jiaoxi and the surrounding area. Any nature lovers or individuals who are looking to get out and enjoy an excursion in nature should enjoy this hiking excursion.
Suao Cold Spring
While Yilan is known for its hot spring retreats, there’s a contrasting spot that visitors might want to seek out called Suao Cold Spring. This cold spring is perpetually at less than 72 degrees Fahrenheit, no matter what time of year it happens to be. The water of this cold spring is also naturally carbonated, so visitors who place their feet into its depths will notice bubbles forming on their skin. Some believe that the water is good for the skin, so it is often encouraged for visitors to bathe their faces as well. Nearby, there are also private cabins for rental, so if visitors wish, they can take a private dip in the cool, fizzy waters as well.
Nanfangao Nantian Temple
Get acquainted with the culture of Yilan with a stop at Nanfangao Nantian Temple. This stunning temple was inaugurated in 1958 and is dedicated to the sea goddess Mazu, who has been said to protect faithful fishermen from tempestuous seas. In 1990, twenty artists were commissioned to craft a pure gold statue of Mazu, which still resides in the temple today, along with many other unique pieces, all inside a beautifully decorated building. Any traveler who appreciates art, culture, or religion will love a stop at this temple.
Yilan Distillery Chia Chi Lan Wine Museum
Step into a distillery that’s over 100 years old, and experience a piece of history while enjoying some spirits from Yilan. The Yilan Distillery Chia Chi Lan Wine Museum was established in 1909 and features several exhibition halls, which are all free to the public, including the Taiwan Anka Museum, the Chia Chi Lan Wine Museum, and more. Once upon a time, the distillery focused on crafting rice wine. Today, liquor like Hungluh Chiew is crafted. Regardless, fans of history and spirits alike will enjoy a visit to his historical site.
Confucius Temple
Located near downtown Yilan, the Confucius Temple is a lovely site, featuring unique architecture, colorful design features, and a beautiful shrine area. Originally, the temple was constructed in the 1860s, though it has since been reconstructed for reasons, including typhoons that did a tremendous amount of damage to the original site. Today, it serves as a place of calm reflection on Confucian ideals and makes for a lovely site for visitors to explore when they’re vacationing in the area.
Donago Bay
Beach lovers, get ready for the excursion of a lifetime when visiting Donago Bay. Visitors can dip their toes into the pristine waters of the bay, stretch out on the sand, and relax. The beach area of this bay stretches over a mile and offers pristine, white sands, and remarkable views of the crystalline waters. Whether visitors are hoping to give their tan a boost, they’re looking to take a swim in the beautiful bay, or they’re hoping to spend some time surrounded by locals, Donago Bay is the perfect retreat for any sunny day in Yilan.
