Koh Yao Noi Info | Island Yoga Retreats, Nature Walks & Muay Thai Camps

Often said to be as close as it gets to actually reaching paradise, Koh Yao Noi island is tucked away to the northeast of the island of Phuket. This island is known for its easygoing pace and quiet, steady, unchanging culture. It is a place that leans into tradition, trust and peaceful living, which can be a welcome respite from the pushier, more touristy destinations in Thailand. If you’re looking for a time of luxurious relaxation and self-bettering introspection, this tranquil escape is the place to go. Read on to learn about a few experiences at Koh Yao Noi that guarantee maximum relaxation.

Koh Yao Noi-Mangroves

Kayak Through the Mangroves of Koh Yao Noi

Exploring the jungle-like mangrove forests surrounding Koh Yao Noi is the perfect option for nature lovers and visitors looking for a laid-back outdoor adventure. An ideal blend of relaxing and enticing, nature watching in the mangrove forests is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, as you’re sure to see sights you won’t find anywhere else. A number of resorts and rental shops across the island offer affordable kayak rentals. In fact, many resorts will offer guided kayak tours through the mangrove forests.

  • Wildlife encounters in Koh Yao Noi – Whether you choose to take a guided tour or create your own adventure, you’ll sink into the serenity of nature as you explore the mangroves. A mangrove forest is an intricate ecosystem in which very unique and exciting species can be found, both under the water and on land. As you kayak along, keep your eyes peeled for exotic members of the animal kingdom — and don’t worry, as long as you keep a safe distance, none of the mangrove-dwelling creatures should pose any danger to you.
  • Mangrove monkeys – Above the water, you may be lucky enough to spot some primate friends gathered in the trees. The long-tailed macaque (also known as crab-eating macaque) is a type of monkey known to often make its home in lush mangroves. In fact, in Thailand specifically, these creatures are often called ling samae, which literally translates to “mangrove monkeys.” Though many of their more defining features might be perceived by humans as masculine, like their exquisitely mustached faces, long-tailed macaques actually operate in a matriarchal society. When looking for mangrove monkeys, keep in mind that they are recognizable by their gray-beige fur, small, pointed ears, bright, orange-yellow eyes and, of course, the feature for which they are named: their long tails, which exceed the length of their bodies.

  • Flying foxes – Other exciting wildlife living above the waters of the mangrove forest include flying foxes (also called fruit bats), one of the largest types of bats in the world. These winged wonders are typically about a foot long, with wingspans reaching up to nearly 5 ft. Though these are mostly nocturnal creatures, if you kayak around dusk, you might catch a glimpse of them flitting around, catching bugs to feast on. The old colloquialism “blind as a bat” doesn’t apply to these guys. In fact, this type of bat doesn’t use echolocation to get around: they use their sharp eyesight instead. If you’re exploring in the daytime, you likely won’t see any flying foxes in action, but you might get a peek at a few hanging upside down in the trees, wrapped up in their own wings, enjoying a daytime snooze.

  • Birdwatching – While we’re on the subject of winged creatures, the mangrove trees provide shelter to a number of different bird species as well. You’re likely to encounter different types of heron, egrets, sea eagles and more. Many species of kingfisher also frequent mangrove forests, due to the ample fish and prawn feasts below the water’s surface.

  • Soldier crabs – Both along and below the surface of the mangrove forest waters, there’s even more wildlife to take in. At low tide, you’ll likely see dozens, if not hundreds, of soldier crabs skittering around in large groups. These little guys have rounded bodies that are often blue or grayish in color, and small white legs. What really makes them stand out from the rest of the crabby crowd, though, is that soldier crabs walk forward, rather than sideways like most crab species.

  • Mudskippers – Mudskippers are another species often found among the mangroves. This incredibly unique little fish is known for its ability to spend long expanses of time out of the water. In fact, they’re the only kind of fish known to use their front flippers like arms and actually climb the roots and branches of trees. A fish climbing a tree — that’s a sight you’re not likely to see anywhere else, making a visit to the mangroves of Koh Yao Noi a can’t-miss experience on your Thai adventure.

It still boasts seaside views, being a short walk from the beach, but this one is not directly on the beachfront. It’s known for its local, authentic vibe, said to feel as though you’re being welcomed with a friend’s home cooking. Sea Gypsy gets its namesake from the Sea Gypsies of Thailand, a group of islanders who are known for their skill at angling, both by way of diving traps and line fishing. In fact, there are a few areas around Phuket where you can pay to spend a day out on the water catching your own fresh fish with the Sea Gypsies.

Motorbike Across Koh Yao Noi’s Eastern Coast

Once you’ve experienced the beauty of Koh Yao Noi‘s nature by way of kayak, you’re sure to be itching for more. There’s always more to see in this tropical oasis, especially along its eastern coast, but you’ll want to rent a bicycle or motorbike if you’d like to experience it all. We’ve created a shortlist below of the must-visit natural wonders across the island. Check in with your resort to see if they offer rentals, as there’s a chance they also have tours available. If not, there are a handful of local shops that will rent one out to you.

Koh Yao Noi-Thakow Waterfall

Thakow Waterfall

At the base of Thakow Waterfall, you’ll find a small natural pool, perfect for taking a quick dip to cool off. Glistening water tumbles its way over the dark, jagged rocks of this small waterfall. When the waterfall’s flow is light, you can even stand below it and be showered with the sparkling waters. It’s worth noting, though, that this waterfall may be inactive if there has not been much rainfall in the days prior to your visit. We also recommend wearing shoes with good traction if you plan to explore this spot, as the rocks and pathways surrounding Thakow Waterfall are usually a bit slick, if not covered over quite a bit with water.

Koh Yao Noi-Tha Khao Pier

Tha Khao Pier

Tha Khao Pier provides must-see views out across Phang Nga Bay. On clear days, from the end of the pier, you can see dozens of islets in the distance, and a range of towering monoliths stretching their way out of the waters. You may even opt to take a boat ride out among them. As you sail along, you’ll experience the other-worldly effect of passing through the channels with these tall stone formations rising above you on either side. You can also take a speed boat ride from Tha Khao Pier to a number of islets or to Krabi to visit its craggy limestone cliffs.

Koh Yao Noi-Hornbill View Point

Hornbill View Point

Just north of Tha Khao Pier you’ll find Hornbill View Point. Though it may not look like much on the surface, this spot is unique in that it provides a view of the towering monoliths in the distance without any eyesores of tourism in your way. For those looking to get idyllic, untouched-by-humans views and photos, this is the spot.

Koh Yao Noi-Had Yao Beach

Had Yao Beach

If you continue traveling north, you’ll reach Had Yao Beach. If you’re looking for a truly secluded spot to sunbathe or go for a dip, Had Yao Beach is the place to do it. Here, you’ll find a handful of hammocks and a few tire swings hanging from the trees. Because there aren’t many tourists here, the sands along the shoreline are clean and free from trash or debris. Though don’t be surprised if the property behind the beachfront is less pristine. Had Yao Beach is also known for being a great place to spot a few of the local cows roaming about in nearby grasses. It’s worth noting, though, that the track to get to this destination is a bit rougher than the roads on most of the island, so it’s not ideal for motorbike beginners.

Recover with a Thai Massage

After all your exploring, adventuring and private Muay Thai lessons, treating yourself to a Thai massage is the perfect way to unwind. Just north of KYN Muay Thai you’ll find Thanakha Massage, said to be the absolute best spot for an authentic Thai massage on all of Koh Yao Noi. Though Thanakha Massage is known for Thai massage, a number of other types of massage and services are available. The massage therapists are well-versed in the art of everything from deep tissue and sports massage, to scalp and Swedish massage. You can also receive a relaxing manicure, pedicure or facial here.

What is Thai massage?

Thai massage is the practice of combining multiple techniques to promote healing in the muscles and within the body holistically. During a Thai massage, your massage therapist will utilize acupressure, which is the art of stimulating specific pressure points to not only relax your muscles, but also to regulate the flow of energy throughout your body. She (or he) will then position your body in a series of yoga poses to stretch muscles and alleviate tension. These poses will be combined with continued stimulation of pressure points. Keep in mind that this method of massage requires a lot of physical interaction between you and your massage therapist, which may not suit the preferences of all customers.

Thanakha Massage is open every day from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., but you must book your appointment in advance.

Recharge with Yoga & Meditation

What would a dreamy escape to a tropical paradise off the coast of Thailand be without the ultimate practice in serenity and well-being? Yoga is praised throughout the world not only for its direct health benefits as exercise, but also for the mental and emotional benefits reaped by those who practice it in tandem with meditation.

Island Yoga

Located just north of the famous Six Senses Yao Noi resort, along the eastern coast of Koh Yao Noi, you’ll find Island Yoga, a tranquil retreat center that offers multiple options for participating in yoga and meditation. Island Yoga specializes in the hatha style of yoga. This style differs from the vinyasa method, which is most popular in Western countries, in its primary aim. Vinyasa is a method centered around increasing body heat, building strength and getting in a solid workout. Hatha, however, aims to bring peace, balance and alignment to one’s body, mind, and spirit, which is a more meditative approach to yoga.

Island Yoga holds hatha yoga classes every day from 10-11:15 a.m., which visitors are welcome to attend for just 300 THB. Yoga mats, prop blocks and water refills are provided, it is just recommended that you bring a positive attitude and a water bottle so you can stay hydrated. If you’re interested in participating in multiple different types of yoga classes throughout the week, they also offer three (3,500 THB), five (5,500 THB), and seven-day (7,000 THB) class packages, which can be purchased and participated in no matter where you are staying on the island. These packages include an invitation to a sunrise tai chi meditation, during which they serve coffee, tea, and snacks, and two hatha yoga classes per day. Packages can be purchased at Island Yoga’s office from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day, or can be booked online in advance.

Koh Yao Noi-Thai Massage
