Tips For Choosing a Great Family-Friendly Hotel and Neighborhood in Taipei

There are plenty of great family-friendly neighborhoods and hotels to choose from in Taipei and these tips can help you choose a place that will be best for you and the kids. Whether you’re traveling with older kids, or younger, these tips can help make sure that you know what to expect when you visit Taipei and can help make sure that you have a great vacation when you stay in Taipei.

  • Pick a hotel that is near the Taoyuan International Airport or a hotel that allows you to travel easily between the airport and your hotel. When traveling with kids, it can be a challenge if you have to change modes of transportation often, or if you’re traveling for a long period of time, so choosing a hotel that is near the airport can be a good way to ensure you are able to get the kids to the hotel as soon after your flight as possible.
  • Choosing a hotel that is close to the airport also makes it easier for you and your family to get from the airport to your hotel quickly, meaning that you and the kids can sleep off some of that jetlag without having to fight too hard to get to your hotel after a long flight.
  • Select a hotel that has amenities that you and your kids can enjoy. Taipei can get quite hot in the summer, and is often rainy, so if you think you’ll be spending some time inside the hotel, make sure to select a hotel that has some fun amenities for you and the kids (a pool, family rooms, in-house shopping).
  • Taipei is known for its great markets, food, and historical attractions, so try to stay at a hotel and in a neighborhood that are either close to these attractions, or are close to the metro system.
  • Some districts in Taipei are known for their nightlife, some for their night markets, some for shopping, and some for attractions, and some have a combination of things to see. Choose a district that is good for you, your family, and the kind of vacation you’d like to take.
  • Remember that the metro is easy to navigate in Taipei, so if you find that you don’t end up enjoying the area you are staying in, visiting other districts in the city is quick and simple with public transit in Taipei.

Here are a few of the amazing neighborhoods that you can choose from in Taipei and some information on what to expect for each district.

  • Wanhua District is a great fit for families that are looking to have an educational and fun visit to Taipei. Filled with historical destinations, such as the Tianhou Temple, which is almost 300 years old, as well as the Huaxi Street Market, and the Taipei Cinema Park, there is plenty to see, do, and enjoy in the Wanhua District.
  • Da’an District is a good choice for families that love to eat, as the popular Yongkang Street is in the Da’an District and is one of the best places to try Taiwanese food in the city, as well as home to many other affordable restaurants with great food options from all over the world. The Da’an District also has amazing green spaces that are great for families to explore, including Fuzhoushan Park and Fuyang Eco Park. If you’re looking for great food and the great outdoors, consider staying in the Da’an District.
  • Zhongshan District is a great choice for families that are wanting to experience modern Taiwanese art, as the Taipei Fine Arts Museum is in the area. But that’s not all, the Zhongshan District is also home to the Rongxing Garden Park, which has a great playground, beautiful, grassy areas to sit an enjoy, as well an indoor pool. With the Qingguang Market also available to shop at, there’s plenty of kid-friendly fun available in this district!
  • Luzhou District is actually located in New Taipei City, which is a 30-minute transit ride from Taipei, but can be a great choice for families that are looking to get outside of the hustle and bustle of the big city, but are still looking to have a great experience in Taiwan. Close enough to Taipei to be a good location to make your home base, but far enough away that you can feel like you’re really getting into the thick of Taiwan and its culture, the Luzhou District is home to the Forbidden City Museum, which holds a collection of Chinese historical relics that can’t be seen anywhere else, as well as the Luzhou Night Market, which is a great location to experience Taiwan’s food as well as its religious culture as the market is close to both the YongLian Temple and the Baohe Temple.

Tips on using public transit when you’re visiting Taipei

Public transit in Taipei is easy to use and very convenient, so the sooner you get used to it, the better your vacation will be. While some people may choose to stick with the metro, the bus system in Taipei is also fantastic, as is their regional train system. Taking public transit with kids can be a little challenging but doing a little research beforehand will help you know what to expect when it comes to getting around in the city. The following tips can help get you on your way in Taipei and help to make sure that you and your family are able to travel with ease.

  • Get your kids used to public transit before you arrive in Taipei. If your kids have never used public transit before, then be sure to get them used to the idea by using public transit in your own hometown–at least a few times. Some places don’t have access to a metro system and, in this case, it would be a good idea to sit down with your kids (depending on their ages) and discuss proper behavior for public transit.
  • Strollers are generally okay to use in Taipei. If your children are very young, you may wish to bring a stroller with you, however, strollers may be a challenge on public transit and in the markets as these places can get very crowded during the day. Just make sure to be polite and pack your patience and things should go fine. Most people are very kind in Taipei and make exceptions for small children.
  • Know where you want to go ahead of time. By planning your transit trip before you leave your hotel, you can save yourself time and worry by knowing which stops to get off and on. When you’re traveling with kids, things can get hectic, so alleviate some of your stress by making sure that you’re familiar with transit routes around the city.
  • Save time and get an EasyCard to pay for transit. Instead of fishing for coins or paying for a metro ticket with each ride, get an EasyCard for yourself and your kids. Children under 6 years of age are free on public transit, so you may even save yourself some money by using public transit (instead of paying for a taxi).
  • Check the bus sign when you get on! Above the driver’s head on the bus should be a sign that displays a Chinese character (either 上 for on, or 下 for off). If the character displayed is on, then you need to swipe your easy card (or pay with change) when you get on the bus. If the character displayed is off, then you need to swipe your EasyCard (or pay with change) when you exit the bus.
  • Sometimes, the best solution is a taxi. While taxis aren’t as inexpensive as taking the bus or the metro, the fares in Taipei are less expensive as many other major cities. So, if the kids are tired (or you are) and you just want to get back to your hotel, taking a taxi in Taipei is a good solution. Not all of the drivers will speak English, however, so it’s good to install a translation application on your phone before leaving. Also, be sure that you know the address of your hotel in Chinese to give to your driver. (see if the hotel concierge has a business card you can take with you).
  • Don’t be afraid to ask for help. The people of Taipei are known for being welcoming and kind, so if you are out and about, asking for help is fine. Not everyone will speak English, so it’s good to either have a translation app or learn some local phrases before going. If you need assistance with transit, you can also ask your hotel’s concierge or guest services and they should be able to give you some recommendations for transit or get a hold of a taxi service for you.
