Coming from the airport
First, you’ll likely have to get into the city from one of two airports. Most international travelers fly into Suvarnabhumi Airport, which is the more convenient option in terms of transit. All you have to do is hop on the Airport Rail Link and take the train to Phaya Thai BTS Station, which has easy connections to the rest of the city’s rail system. Note that if you are headed to the Khao San Road area rather than the city center, the better option is to catch bus S1 from Gate 7 on the ground floor.
Don Mueang Airport does not have a rail link to the city, so your best and most affordable option from here is to take a bus. You can take the A1 bus just outside the terminal to Mo Chit BTS Station. For Khao San Road , take the A4 bus instead.
BTS and MRT rail system
Bangkok‘s fantastic BTS Skytrain and MRT subway systems connect most of the city’s major shopping, business, and entertainment districts, making them the best way to get around and avoid the congested roads. The BTS Skytrain has two lines, the Silom Line and the Sukhumvit Line, which meet at Siam BTS Station downtown. Tourists are more likely to use the Skytrain, but you can also change to the MRT subway at Sala Daeng BTS Station (Silom MRT Station) and Asok BTS Station (Sukhumvit MRT Station).
Taxis, tuk tuks & ride-share services
While the BTS and MRT offer the best way to get around during your trip to Bangkok, there are some areas of the city that aren’t as well serviced. In this case, the best strategy is to head to the station nearest to your destination and hail a taxi or tuk tuk from there. Tuk tuks are three-wheeled, motorized “buggies” that can fit three to four people comfortably. Tuk tuk drivers generally like to take passengers short distances only and charge a little more than taxis, but the experience of riding through Bangkok with the air blowing through your hair is worth a few extra baht! You can also use the Grab app, a ride-share service popular throughout Southeast Asia.
Riverboats and ferries

The easiest way to get to the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew is via a Chao Phraya Express Boat from Sathorn Pier.
2. Wat Pho
Wat Pho is a sprawling temple complex known for its giant golden reclining Buddha. The statue is so large that it is impossible to take in all at once. The temple grounds also contain four chapels that house 394 smaller gilded images of the Buddha. It is the oldest temple in Bangkok and considered to be a place of healing, as it once served as a school for traditional Thai medicine.
Wat Pho is located just a few minutes’ walk past the Grand Palace, or you can hop back on the ferry for one more stop.
3. Wat Arun
Wat Arun, also known as the Temple of the Dawn, is a truly picturesque temple. Its steep towers, covered in colorful ceramic and porcelain tiles that shimmer in the sun, rise high above the horizon as you approach. Khao San Road is not located close to any BTS or MRT stations, so you will have to catch a boat from Sathorn Pier up to Phra Arthit Pier, which is just a few minutes’ walk away from all of the action.
5. Siam Paragon Shopping Centre
When visiting Bangkok, you have to go to at least one upscale luxury shopping mall, and that mall should be Siam Paragon Shopping Centre. It is among the largest malls in the country, home to many high-end designer fashion brands, a food court and restaurants serving some of the best Thai food in the city, an exhibition hall, and a luxurious multiplex movie theater. The bottom floor of this shopping center is also where you will find the Siam Ocean World aquarium, which is one of the largest aquariums in South East Asia.

6. Terminal 21 Shopping Mall

Shoppers can visit the Caribbean, Rome, Paris, Tokyo, London, Istanbul, San Francisco, and Hollywood all in the span of one afternoon. The fantastic dining options offer cuisine from each of the mall’s destinations.
Terminal 21 Shopping Mall is easily accessed via a walkway from Asok BTS Station.
7. Chatuchak Market
Chatuchak Market is considered to be one of the largest markets in the world, with more than 15,000 stalls selling a dizzying array of merchandise and food. The majority of the vendors are open on the weekends, when more than 200,000 shoppers pass through the market. For clothing, accessories, and souvenirs at some of the best prices in the city (which you can try to bargain down even lower), make some time to spend at least a few hours exploring this popular landmark.
Chatuchak Market is situated just a quick walk from both Mo Chit BTS Station and Chatuchak Park MRT Station.
8. Jim Thompson House Museum
Jim Thompson House Museum is the former residence of an American businessman named James H.W. Thompson, who was instrumental in the revival of the Thai silk industry over the 1950s and ’60s. The museum is actually a garden-enclosed compound with six traditional Thai teakwood homes that showcase Thompson’s collection of traditional Thai paintings and historical Buddha statues. It is a wonderful way to experience some of the culture and history of Thailand.
Jim Thompson House Museum is located about a five-minute walk from National Stadium BTS Station. To get there, leave out of station Exit 1 and turn right on Soi Kasemsan 2.

Coming from the airport
First, you’ll likely have to get into the city from one of two airports. Most international travelers fly into Suvarnabhumi Airport, which is the more convenient option in terms of transit. All you have to do is hop on the Airport Rail Link and take the train to Phaya Thai BTS Station, which has easy connections to the rest of the city’s rail system. Note that if you are headed to the Khao San Road area rather than the city center, the better option is to catch bus S1 from Gate 7 on the ground floor.
Don Mueang Airport does not have a rail link to the city, so your best and most affordable option from here is to take a bus. You can take the A1 bus just outside the terminal to Mo Chit BTS Station. For Khao San Road , take the A4 bus instead.
BTS and MRT rail system
Bangkok‘s fantastic BTS Skytrain and MRT subway systems connect most of the city’s major shopping, business, and entertainment districts, making them the best way to get around and avoid the congested roads. The BTS Skytrain has two lines, the Silom Line and the Sukhumvit Line, which meet at Siam BTS Station downtown. Tourists are more likely to use the Skytrain, but you can also change to the MRT subway at Sala Daeng BTS Station (Silom MRT Station) and Asok BTS Station (Sukhumvit MRT Station).
Taxis, tuk tuks & ride-share services
While the BTS and MRT offer the best way to get around during your trip to Bangkok, there are some areas of the city that aren’t as well serviced. In this case, the best strategy is to head to the station nearest to your destination and hail a taxi or tuk tuk from there. Tuk tuks are three-wheeled, motorized “buggies” that can fit three to four people comfortably. Tuk tuk drivers generally like to take passengers short distances only and charge a little more than taxis, but the experience of riding through Bangkok with the air blowing through your hair is worth a few extra baht! You can also use the Grab app, a ride-share service popular throughout Southeast Asia.
Riverboats and ferries
